Be an Safety Inspector 1. Be an OSHA Inspector Your job is to inspect the Material Testing laboratory at a Metal Machining and Product Fabrication company for safety measures in place and any safety violations. You are given a Safety Checklist of things to look for. Inspect each picture and note if the safety requirements from the list are met. If not, suggest what should be done to correct the violation(s). 2

Safety Checklist Fume Hoods Fume hood must be present whenever toxic chemicals (solids, liquids and gases) are being handled. Fume hood must be operated at the proper sash height, that is, in the lowered position. When the sash is placed at the proper working height, it will also provide a barrier against any unanticipated explosions, fires, spills, or splashes. Lab doors should be kept closed so that hood can operate properly and so that gases and fumes do not spread to other parts of the plant. Be an Safety Inspector 3

Safety Checklist Fume Hoods Excessive amounts of chemical and apparatus should not be stored in the hood. This can greatly impair its performance. Spark sources (example, electrical heaters) should not be placed inside the hood when flammable gases or liquids are present. Electrical apparatus should not be permanently stored in the hood. Be an Safety Inspector 4

Safety Checklist Eye Wash and Shower Station Must be present. There should be a clear path to the station. There should not be any large or small obstacles around the station. Gas Cylinders Should be stored in the upright position and chained. Should be transported in a trolley, not dragged on the floor. Articles of clothing should not be hanged from cylinders Be an Safety Inspector 5

Safety Checklist Hygiene and Sanitation Proper PPE (gloves, mask or respirators, lab coat, proper shoes) should be worn, especially when handling any chemical or product. Hands should be washed regularly, especially before eating. Workers should not eat or drink in the lab. Workers should not smoke in the lab or around flammable liquids or gases. Counter tops should be kept clean and excess containers removed and stored. Be an Safety Inspector 6
