Unit 1: Safety in the Chemical Laboratory Room 101

Main Goals of This Lesson 1.identify the safety and protective equipment available in the laboratory and describe how and when to use each piece of equipment 2.indicate on a school map the location of the nearest fire alarm and appropriate fire exits 3.list sources of first-aid assistance other than the classroom teacher 4.describe common chemistry laboratory hazards and the appropriate procedure or technique for dealing with each 5.produce a list of general rules of safe laboratory conduct 6.perform laboratory experiments in a safe manner

1.identify the safety and protective equipment available in the laboratory and describe how and when to use each piece of equipment

Emergency Equipment 1. The Fire Extinguisher (pg 1)

IF YOU FIGHT A FIRE, REMEMBER THE WORD PASS... PULL... AIM... SQUEEZE... SWEEP... PULL... Pull the pin. Some extinguishers require releasing a lock latch, pressing a puncture lever or other motion. AIM... Aim low, pointing the extinguisher nozzle at the base of the fire.

SQUEEZE... Squeeze the handle. This releases the extinguishing agent. SWEEP... Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire until it appears to be out. Watch the fire area in case fire breaks out again, and repeat use of extinguisher if necessary.

WHEN NOT TO FIGHT A FIRE... - If the fire could block your only exit! - If the fire is spreading too quickly! - If the type or size of the extinguisher is wrong! - If the fire is too large! - If you don't know how to use your fire extinguisher! If any of the above conditions exist, leave immediately!!!

Back Chemical Room

Seniors Hallway

The nearest Fire Alarm Pull

In case of a Fire Alarm Room 101 Exits to the Student Parking lot

2. Fire Blanket (pg 2)

And YANK it out

??When to use a fire blanket?? When a students clothing or hair catches on fire To smother burning material the floor or on a lab bench

How to use a fire blanket Person on fire must stop, drop, and roll (NEVER wrap a person while they are standing up…why?) Throw the blanket over person asap

3. Eyewash Fountain/station ( pg 3) Keep eyes open and blink rapidly Keep washing eye for at least 15 minutes If using the sink, the affected eye must be facing down

Every SINK can be a eye wash station Lye on back, infected eye towards the floor, rinse…

PRESS ….in the back chemical room

4. Emergency Shower (pg 4)

PULL HARD

5. Emergency gas Shut off Valves

Priorities If more then one emergency is involved, tend to the most serious problem FIRST –Fire –Chemical in eye –Body soaked in chemicals

Glass Trash Bin

Chemical Spill Kit Spill Pillows Pillow Disposal Bags and gloves

Fume Hood

Mercury Spill Kit

Protective Eye Wear Face Shields Goggles

Lab Aprons

What to do if there is an Injury Remain calm. Notify teacher immediately. Know how to use the emergency equipment and where it is located

Know your safety symbols!!

4 Types of Hazards: 1.__________ 2.__________ 3.__________ 4.__________

4 Types of Hazards: 1.Poison 2.Flammable 3.Corrosive 4.Explosive
