Tour Lab Chemical Hygiene Plan (2004), pg. 8 C ONTROL M EASURES AND E QUIPMENT J ANUARY 10, 2012

V ENTILATION Laboratory ventilation should be not less that six air changes per hour (calculated) Work with toxic chemicals that have low air concentration limits, or that have high vapor pressures, should always be done in a hood Fume hoods should provide 70 to 90 linear feet per minute of air flow

The apparatus inside the hood should be placed on the floor of the hood at least six inches away from the front edge Fume hood windows should be lowered at all times Hoods should never be used as storage areas for chemicals V ENTILATION

In the event of fume hood failure: Immediately stop all work inside the fume hood If safe to do so, secure or isolate reactions and turn off all equipment being used If safe to do so, close all open chemical containers Close the sash completely Report the problem immediately V ENTILATION Safety and Risk Management, Western Carolina University
