The sulfur in sulphur dichloride formally is in the oxidation state 2.

 Melting point: °C  Boiling point: 59 °C  Physical state at room temperature: liquid( foul smelling )  Colour : cherry- red  Formula weight:  Density: 1.621g cm − 3  Solubility in water: hydrolysis  Electrical conductivity: Poor

 Laboratory preparation: S8(s) + 4 Cl2(g)4S2Cl2(lL) S2Cl2( L)+ Cl 2(g) 2 SCl2( L) SCl 2 is produced by the chlorination of either elemental sulfur or disulfur dichloride. The process occurs in a series of steps, some of which are: Heat is released during the process

 SCl 2 is used in organic synthesis.  Adds to alkenes  chloride-substituted thioethers.  Illustrative applications :addition to 1.5- cyclooctadiene  a bicyclic thioether and ethylene  sulfur mustard.S(CH 2 CH 2 Cl) 2.  The sulfur mustards (mustard gas), are a class of related cytotoxic, vesicant chemical warfare agents with the ability to form large blisters on exposed skin. Mustard gas was first used effectively in World War Icytotoxicvesicantchemical warfare agents blisters used effectively in World War I

 SCl 2 is also a precursor to several inorganic sulfur compounds.  Treatment with fluoride salts  SF 4 which is a corrosive species.SF 4  Reaction with ammonia affords sulfur nitrides related to S 4 N 4.S 4 N 4  With H 2 S, SCl 2 reacts to give "lower" sulfanes such as S 3 H 2.

 SCl 2 hydrolyzes with release of HCl. Old samples contain Cl 2.HCl

1.Wear personal safety equipment ( such as gloves and safety glasses). 2.Do the experiment in the fume cupboard 3,Wash the affected area with plenty of water if split into eyes, onto the skin and clothes.
