Equilibrium & Le Chatelier’s Principle Labs April 03 – 11, 2014

Catalyst  Pick up a lab handout.  Pass in your homework: “What’s So Equal About Equilibrium?” Article Questions. You may keep the article. Check to make sure you titled the assignment.  Discuss this Question: How will increasing pressure shift the equilibrium of the Haber process reaction? Explain.

Objective  I can work collaboratively to investigate an industrial application of Le Chatelier’s Principle. If you want to follow along on your iPad, go to open the Chemistry page and select the power point titled “Le Chatelier Lab”.

Agenda  Catalyst  Video Investigation  Computer Investigation: The Haber-Bosch Process  Equilibrium Wet Lab Prep: Lab Parts 1 and 2  Exit Slip

Video Investigation  Be ready to discuss these questions:  Do scientists have a moral responsibility for the harmful use of their inventions?  How would you judge Haber’s contributions to science and society? To share your answers with the class, submit them here: D_9OuCLaJVH3aS1yHtP0n_nQ3bc/viewform D_9OuCLaJVH3aS1yHtP0n_nQ3bc/viewform

Haber-Bosch Process Computer Lab  In this lab, you will work with a partner to determine the most efficient way to produce ammonia.  As you follow the lab procedure and use the computer simulation, try to predict what will happen according to Le Chatelier’s principle.  As the manager of the plant, your job is to produce the maximum amount of NH3 for the least amount of money during each 24-hour shift.

Access the Simulation  Go to:  Type “ Habe r” into the search box and click find  Click on “ Control a Haber-Bosch Ammonia Plant ” to open the simulation. You will have to click on the title of the Sim two times.  After the sim is open, you are ready to begin the lab. Follow the procedure on your lab worksheet. Write all your answers on the worksheet.

Equilibrium Wet Lab: Pre-Lab  Complete Parts 1 & 2 of the Equilibrium Lab  Part 1: Read the article titled “Equilibrium Lab.” Answer the Pre-laboratory Questions on a separate sheet of paper.  Part 2: Chemical Reactions  Use your notes on Le Chatelier’s Principle for help.
