Value Proposition: Investment in Education Builds the Workforce & Leadership of Tomorrow The Issue: Rapid advancements in society and work fueled by technology are creating new pressure on employers and educators to change. These pressures include an increased demand for an educated and skilled workforce, technology relevancy, and a propensity for lifelong learning. The Research Institute Study: Return on Educational Investment for Specific Academic Degrees Research Focus: To provide more precise information on the value of a college degree, researchers sought to determine the return on educational investment (ROEI) for specific academic and professional disciplines: business, computer science/management information systems, healthcare support, nursing, elementary education, and engineering. 4© 2011 University of Phoenix, Inc. Value Proposition: Investment in Education Builds the Workforce & Leadership of Tomorrow The Findings: Published 7/29/11. findings suggest that nontraditional students may receive important financial momentum by continuing to work while attending college—enabling them to earn while they learn.: Business: Traditional business graduates were anticipated to receive between 15% to 21% ROEI, and nontraditional graduates were expected to have returns between 28% and 43%. Computer science/management information systems: Traditional graduates can expect to realize a 16% to 24% ROEI on bachelor’s degrees in these fields. The ROEI of nontraditional graduates was predicted to be between 26% and 49%. Elementary education: Traditional elementary education degree holders were predicted to realize an average 9% ROEI. Nontraditional graduates were forecasted to earn an ROEI up to 18%. Engineering: Depending on their specific field (e.g., petroleum, chemical, computer, civil or engineering technology), traditional engineering graduates were predicted to receive an ROEI ranging from 19% to 29%. Nontraditional graduates’ ROEI was expected to range from 34% to 53%. 5© 2011 University of Phoenix, Inc. All rights reserved.
