The Garden Club of South Carolina Historic Trees for Historic Places “There’s History in These Roots” President’s Project

What is HTHP? GCSC President’s Project Primary project GCSC for Focus: To save historic properties, trees, and heritage planting across the entire state Official state date – April 27, 2013 – Get busy now!!!!

Who is involved in HTHP? All garden clubs across the state All state and community resources All GCSC committees All GCSC District Directors All state and local historic organizations All state and local horticultural organizations ANYONE ELSE YOU CHOOSE TO INVOLVE!

HTHP Goals To identify historic trees located across SC and celebrate their existence o Located on historic site o Located on public site To plant historic trees in historic places and celebrate their existence o Historic place may be public or private

HTHP Objectives Working with all GCSC Committees and District contacts – ensure publicity Working with all non-GCSC Committees and District contacts – ensure publicity Non-GCSC Committees and contacts o Civic organizations, churches, community members o Historic preservationists, landscape architects, archivists, native plant societies, politicians

HTHP Strategies Identification of historic trees across SC o Determine site and/or tree o Document site and/or tree o Plan public celebration of site/tree o Publicize and celebrate o Include all ages in celebrations

HTHP Strategies Planting of historic trees in historic places across SC o Determine site and/or tree o Document site and/or tree o Plan public celebration of site/tree o Publicize and celebrate o Include all ages in celebrations

HTHP Expected Outcomes Identifications and planting in public places across SC by all garden clubs & community organizations All identifications and plantings will be celebrated and included in an annual state publication Effective collaboration with GCSC chairmen and non-board members

HTHP Expected Outcomes Effective collaboration with non-GCSC members: e.g. local Rotary Clubs Inclusion of all ages in celebrations Publicity for GCSC and HTHP as a force for good GCSC membership expansion

HTHP Organizational Structure Jane Pearman, general chair of GCSC HTHP Judy Bleecker, general coordinator of GCSC HTHP Led by 7 District Directors and Co-Directors Local garden clubs will each have a coordinator who will: o Disseminate info to all club members, community organizations, and other designated individuals o Work with club members and community to identify/plant trees

HTHP Organizational Structure Local Coordinator (continued): o Plan celebrations for all activities o Submit all activities to the District Director (form will be online at GCSC web site) District Director will: o Submit all activities for all District clubs to assigned GCSC Steering Committee District Liaison

HTHP Organizational Structure District Liaison will submit all activities to the HTHP Project Coordinator who will assist with the annual book publication State Award – given to the club and/or District with the most exemplary accomplishments – details to follow Annual celebration – GCSC Memorial Garden

HTHP Organizational “Picture” Local garden club and coordinator – reports to District Directors – reports to GCSC District Liaisons – reports to GCSC Coordinator – reports to Publication Committee – reports to State Awards – happy people! Annual Celebration – even happier people!

HTHP GCC Project Example Local chair/coordinator and committee Identify trees/plant trees/celebrate trees o Identify historic trees in Charleston County (submitted by club members) o Identify historic trees through partnership with Charles Towne Landing o Celebrate these trees and plant a tree with Arbor Day Celebration at CTL – multiple organizations

HTHP GCC Project Example Identify trees/plant trees/celebrate trees o 10,000 Trees for Charleston – planting - adoption of part of one corridor – participate in group celebrations o Planting of trees by GCC Committees, e.g. Jr. Garden Club and Girl Scouts o All activities submitted to District Director to submit to the State for inclusion in annual publication

HTHP Resources Each District Director will have a CD to distribute to district clubs which will include: o HTHP General Information Summary - print and distribute to clubs, organizations, etc. o HTHP Steering Committee members – positions and contact information o List of District Directors and Additional County and State Resources o Power Point presentation to use and share
