UNC Dietetic Internship Program §How Do I Participate Effectively? §Keys To Success In Our Program l Alana D. Cline, PhD, RD, Program Director

Effective Participation Relies On... §Knowing who you are working with §Knowing what that person needs to learn §Having a clear, concise idea of the difference between “need to know” and “nice to know” to qualify as entry-level §Having clear communication with the student, no surprises concerning expectations §Being a GREAT preceptor!

Who Are You Working With In the UNC Internship Program? §We have MANY Adult & Alternative Route Interns. This means… l Adults with more & different work experience l Adults with children & attendant issues l Adults with greater financial responsibilities l Adults with strong commitment to success

More About Who They ARE... §Some are transitioning from “student” to “professional”. This means highly varied previous experiences… l limited patient / client contact? l limited management and f.s. experience? l limited communication skills / team skills? l Untested work ethic / unsure of abilities? l learning how to prioritize and manage time

What Do They Need to Learn? §ADA/CADE has defined that for us… l The Competencies §Our curriculum and how it was designed to be used by you as preceptors… l The Competencies were translated into “Required Assignments and Experiences” l The Competencies form the backbone of the “Rotation Evaluation Forms” l The Progress Reports document growth l The Domain Tests “tweak” the learning process

Need to Know versus Nice to Know Preceptors Need to Identify §Need to Know = achieved competencies to score level of 2 or 3. A score of 1 indicates the intern needs more practice experience. §Nice to Know = advanced level nutritional or f.s. management that comes only with professional experience.

Clear Communications (1) §Provide orientation §Ground rules §Explain the norms for work §Learn who you are working with §Model professional characteristics §Be focused and enthusiastic

Clear Communications (2) §Use our reporting tools l Rotation Evaluation Forms l Mid-End of Rotation Progress Report Form l Domain Tests System l Completion Checklist l Hours Tracking Forms l Evaluation Guidelines for Assignments l my phone number and addresses 970/ ;

Thoughts On Being a Great Preceptor... §Show respect for people of all backgrounds §Create atmosphere for open communication §Support with timely feedback §Give student responsibility §Allow creativity within parameters §Be honest with data and own limitations §Display confidence, demonstrate skills, values and attitudes to be developed

More Thoughts On Being a Great Preceptor... §Show patience, remember to praise when appropriate §Be a lifelong learner Thank You for participating in our program and for the hard work you do!!!
