FRBR: Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records it is the Final Report of the IFLA Study Group on the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records IFLA: The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions Referent: Michael Kronenwett

The aim of the study: - framework - terms of reference - conceptual model -… to define in a systematic way what it is that the user expects to find information about in a bibliographic record and how that information is used.

Objectives of the study two primary objectives: - clearly defined, structured framework - a basic level of functionality for records created by national bibliographic agencies

Definition of bibliographic record: - For the purposes of this study a bibliographic record is defined as the aggregate of data that are associated with entities described in library catalogues and national bibliographies. -The aggregate of data are descriptive data elements such as those defined in the International Standard Bibliographic Descriptions (ISBDs)

Methodology entity analysis technique: 1. Isolate the key objects that are of interest to users of information in a particular domain. These objects of interest or entities are defined at as high a level as possible. 2. the next step in the methodology is to identify the important characteristics or attributes of each entity.

Entities …are the key objects of interest to users of bibliographic data Three Groups of Entities: 1. the products of intellectual or artistic endeavour that are named or described in bibliographic records: work, expression, manifestation, and item. 2. the intellectual or artistic content, the physical production and dissemination, or the custodianship of such products: person and corporate body. 3. the subjects of intellectual or artistic endeavour: concept, object, event, and place.
