Yesterday you read a short story that played out in a rather creative and unusual way. What was so unusual about how yesterday’s story was written? It was written in the form of notes back and forth between two friends. If that story were written today, what form might it have taken rather than little notes on pieces of notebook paper? s or text messages. Today’s story features another person who loves to play ball, but the style of writing is quite different. Yesterday’s piece was fictional. Today’s piece is a true story, and it was written by the person herself.

Turn to p. 192 in your Lit text. “Summer Diamond Girl” is a personal essay (sometimes called a “personal narrative”) by Toni Janik (notice that her name is spelled Toni). As you read, look for clues that reveal Toni’s character traits. Ask yourself, “In what ways is she like yesterday’s character, Janet?” Also ask, “In what ways does she differ from Janet?” In fact, you can get a head start on today’s follow-up assignment by creating a Venn diagram and filling it in while you read. Use the diagram to compare and contrast Toni with Janet. Doing a good job today with this Venn diagram will pay off later... (hint, hint).
