Janet Fish 1938 to Present

Janet Fish’s Life Born in Boston, Mass. Her grandfather was Clark Voorhees who was an American Impressionist artist and help inspire her career. Her Father was an art teacher and her mother was a potter. So she grew up in a very creative and artistic household. Janet would attend summer schools that focused on Painting. Later she attended Smith College in Massachusetts. While there she studied print making and sculpture. In 1960 she graduated college and decided to go to Yale’s school of Art. She received a Bachelors of Art from Yale and then later got her Masters in Art in She was one of the first women to receive a Masters of Fine Arts.

Janet Fish Life and Work While she was at Yale Janet knew and went to school with Rackstraw Downes, Chuck Close, Nancy Graves and Brice Marden. Fish is known widely for her still life paintings but she also does portraits and landscapes. Her style is filled with lots of color and rich detail. Fish’s style was not always supported while she was in college. Many tried to persuade her form working in a realistic vision. However Alex Katz did support her and encouraged her style.Alex Katz

Janet Fish Work Janet Fish’s work has been widely shown. From the Met Museum to Art Institute of Chicago and world wide--She is well known in the world of art. “Her colors have also become increasingly saturated and intense, however finely tuned are their harmonies and relationships. The intricate and precise variable shapes of her colors are also painterly, which provides a tension of duality in her work. I can't help but be reminded of 1000-piece jigsaw puzzles, the ones of infinitely complex scenes made up of tiny beads of color, and laborious as they may be to create, appear effortless and self-evident. There is the sense that every tiny color spot is in precisely the right place, in relation to the thousands of others.”

More about Janet Fish Some consider Fish a realistic painter, but she would disagree. Janet may work from Photos like other realism artist, but she may work from several combine and then adds her style upon the vision--not the photographs vision. She has been compared to other famous women artist such as Mary Cassat, Georgia O’keefe, Berthe Morisot. Mary CassatGeorgia O’keefe Berthe Morisot Janet Fish is currently alive and working.
