5 Biographical Facts In his 50-year career, he played over 20,000 compositions, all over the world. Real name: Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington, he was a composer, pianist, and a big band leader. Was born on April 29, 1899 and died on May 24, He wrote over 1,000 compositions, and stretched into other various genres, including blues, gospel, film scores-popular and classical. Careers spanned more then 50 years and including leading his orchestra, composing an inexhaustible songbook, scoring for movie, composing stage musicals, and world tours.
3 Major Accomplishments Ellington received the Pulitzer Prize. He received 13 Grammy Awards. Was awarded the French legion of Honor in 1973.
His Motivatons He took piano lessons from Marietta Clinkscales, took a job as a peanuts salesmen at baseball games, then sold soda which got him inspired to write “Soda Fountain Rag” at age 15, and then later started writing compositions.
An Influential Contemporary Dave Brubeck lived at duke’s time and worked with each other at times and started off working of his work.
