Los números/estadísticas/fechas Tina Yousefy

Los Números The basic numbers in spanish are: uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve, diez After the basics comes: once, dose, trece, catorse, quince, dieciseis, diecisiete, dieciocho, y diecinueve After these comes the roots for the words twenty, thirty, forty, etc. (veinte, treinta, cuarenta, cincuenta, seisenta, setenta, ochenta, noventa, ciento) To say a double digit number after nineteen, you take the root (i.e. treinta) then add “y” followed by the basic number (i.e. uno) For example: twenty-one would be: veinte y uno, thirty-two: treinta y dos, forty-three: cuarenta y tres, fifty-four: cincuenta y cuatro.

Los Números The hundreds roots are: ciento, doscientos, trescientos, cuatrocientos, quinientos, seiscientos, setecientos, ochocientos, novecientos To form a number in the hundreds, first use a root from above, then add any number to the end of it The thousands roots are: mil, dos mil, tres mil, etc. To form a number in the thousands, first use a root from above, then add any number to the end of it

Activities for practicing with numbers: Watch this youtube video: Translate the ages of everyone in your immediate family, including yourself, into Spanish on a piece of paper Go to page 365 in Abriendo Paso and write out every number you see on this page (ex: instead of 216, write it out: doscientos dieciseis)

Applying Numbers One way to apply numbers is when having a conversation with a new friend For example: -Hola, me llamo Sally, cuantos anos tienes? -Hola, soy Claire, tengo trece anos. Y tu? -Tengo trece anos tambien

Las Estadísticas To form statistics or percentages, first use any number (such as learned in the last slide) And second, add the word “porciento” (percent) to the end of the numerical value For example: fifty-five percent would be cincuenta y cinco porciento, sixty-two percent would be seisenta y dos porciento, etc.

Activities for practicing with statistics: Go to page 294 in Abriendo Paso Pick one of the graphs Take the statistics and write them out as a percentage (round to nearest whole number) Find the statistics for poverty in the country you were assigned and compare those percentages to the percentage of poverty in the U.S. Go to Take number 10 and number 20’s percentages, add them, take your new percentage and translate it into spanish.

Applying statistics When giving a presentation on a certain issue or problem, more times than none a statistic is used to portray the issue. For example if I was presenting about how many people in our spanish class did not know how to form statistics before this powerpoint, I would say: La problema es que setenta y cinco porciento del clase no sean como formar los percentajes o estadisticas.

Vocab to use for statistic & numbers dato- fact Variable- variable porcentaje- percentage Aumentar- to increase proporcional- proportional Ascender- to ascend reduccion- decrease, reduction Caer por debajo- to fall below restante- remaining Correlacion- correlation variacion- variation Crecer- to grow valor- value Creciente- increasing decimal- decimal Crecimiento- increasing fraccion- fraction De forma continua- continously mil- one thousand Decreciente- decreasing mil millones- one billion Disminuir- to decrease millon- one million Distribucion- distribution por ciento- percent Equivalente a- equivalent to promedio, medio- average, mid point Fluctuacion- fluctuation Fluctuar- to fluctuate Frecuencia- frequency Maximo- maximum Mayoria- majority Minimo- minimum Minoria- minority

Las Fechas The days of the week are: domingo, lunes, martes, miercoles, jueves, viernes, y sabado. The months are: enero, febrero, marzo, abril, mayo, junio, julio, agosto, septiembre, octubre, noviembre, diciembre To form a date, first begin with the day of the month (5 th, 6 th, 7 th or cinco, seis, siete) Next use the word “de” followed by the month. (i.e. enero) Next use the word “de” again, followed by the year (i.e. 2014) For example: July 4, 2014 would be written as: 4 de julio de 2014 or cuatro de julio de dos mil catorce

Activities for practicing how to form the date: Watch this youtube video: Find a news article in English where previous or future dates are included in the text then translate those dates into Spanish Take the date of your parent’s, grandparent’s, or any other person’s wedding date, figure out when their 50 th wedding anniversary would be, then translate that date to Spanish

Applying dates Using the date is necessary for several things, such as telling the date an incident occurred. For example, if you were filling out a police report for a hit and run you might say something like: En el cuatro de febrero de dos mil catorce, un hombre golpeo mi coche con su camion.
