Locating Numbers on a Number Line with our BBES 3 rd Graders

The top number in a fraction is called the numerator The bottom number in a fraction is called the denominator. “ D enominator” starts with a “ D ” so look D own at the bottom of the fraction.

numerator 5858 denominator

The BIG number next a fraction is the WHOLE NUMBER fraction

What is the top number called? 3434 The numerator! What is the bottom number called? The denominator!

Name the denominator in this fraction !

Name the numerator in this fraction !

Name the whole number ! 1

Name the numerator in this fraction !

Name the whole number ! 6

Name the denominator in this fraction !

Count the spaces between the WHOLE numbers on the number line

Now add ONE to that number… =

That is your denominator! =

So now just starting counting by 1s, starting with 1. Your WHOLE number will have the same number as the numerator and denominator

Count the spaces between the WHOLE numbers on the number line. What is your denominator? 0 1

Is your denominator 9? Let’s see! What’s wrong with this? 9/9 should be the second whole number! We forgot to add 1 to our count!

That’s better!

What is the DENOMINATOR of your fraction? 0 1

Count the spaces between the WHOLE numbers on the number line and add 1!

So the denominator is = 3 !

Let’s write in the correct fractions now…

What is the DENOMINATOR of your fraction? 0 1

First count the spaces in between, and then add 1!

So = 16! Your denominator is 16!

Now fill in the correct fractions! 0 1

Nice work!

What is the DENOMINATOR of your fraction? 0 1

Count up the spaces in between the whole numbers… Now add 1! So = 4 !

Fill in the fractions!

It doesn’t matter if the WHOLE NUMBERS are 0 and 1…. They might be 2 & 3! 2 3

You still count the spaces and add 1…

(2 + 1 = 3 is the denominator!)

But you add the WHOLE NUMBER in front of the fractions!

The whole numbers might be 7 & 8! 7 8

You still count the spaces and add 1! = 4 is the denominator!

Is this correct? What did I forget?

I forget the WHOLE NUMBERS! Let’s fix it together! 7 77

First find the denominator of your fractions Count the spaces and add 1! = 8 is your denominator!

Now fill in your fractions!

Next, correctly fill in the answers for the fractions at which A, B, C, and D are marked

First find the denominator of your fractions. Count the spaces and add 1! = 5 is your denominator!

Now fill in your fractions!

Finally, correctly fill in the answers for the fractions at which A, B, C, and D are marked

First find the denominator of your fractions. Count the spaces and add 1! = 12 is your denominator!

Now fill in your fractions!

Finally, correctly fill in the answers for the fractions at which A, B, C, and D are marked

A quiz will be handed out to you. Do your best, and TAKE YOUR TIME! Remember to use the strategies we learned as a class. Good luck!
