In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful All Praise Be to Allah, the Lord of the Universe, and peace and blessing be upon Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his pure Household, and his noble Companions

Today’s Agenda: FAST - National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences Islamabad Campus 3 Introduction and Background Revolutions in Library Systems and Library Information System World Wide web and Semantic Web Technologies. Need of hour: Digital and Semantic Digital Library Information Systems Major Issues and challenges in Current Resource Sharing Systems Motivation for Applying Semantic Web Technologies Intelligent findings of the resources Finding similarities between users Sharing of Information using open link data Applying Web Services for information sharing

Leveraging Semantic web in Digital and Social Era FAST - National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences Islamabad Campus 4 A house without books is like a room without windows. No man has a right to bring up children without surrounding them with books..... Human used to go to libraries and purchase paper format of books to increase their knowledge about world. The emergence of Computer and Internet, Digital and Online Libraries has replaced the traditional trends in libraries.

Leveraging Semantic web in Digital and Social Era FAST - National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences Islamabad Campus 5 Computer and digital devices are encouraging paper less society. Internet and Mobile Technologies has made easy communication easy access of information Web Technologies has enabled eye-catching views of information in form colorful web-pages, high color graphics and animated graphs Computational, Database and Semantic Technologies has enable to the point availability of required information.

Leveraging Semantic web in Digital and Social Era Digital Libraries are collection of digital objects, meta-data repositories and archives It helps the users to access the resources irrespective of the physical and geographical location. The key features of digital resource management systems is making availability of digital media and literature in digital format to the users. Current Advance features in digital library systems are Author Mapper and OPAC Integration with Digital Library FAST - National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences Islamabad Campus 6

Leveraging Semantic web in Digital and Social Era User Requirements from Digital Systems: A Scenario  Prof. John: A professor of Agriculture Sciences and decision support systems and expert systems.  Prof.John has research interest in designing and development of new agriculture decision support systems using up-to date technologies.  Prof. John is much interested in obtaining literature about latest research work about his research area globally. FAST - National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences Islamabad Campus 7

Leveraging Semantic web in Digital and Social Era Digital resources in different languages are not linked with each other. Multilingual search Only Syntactical searching like name = ‘computer’ doesn’t mean name = ‘computational’ Intelligent Searching Unable to infer new knowledge from existing based on defined rules. Knowledge Inference Unable to share and/or transfer information from one digital system to another (Lack of standardization) Sharing Information Unable to identify the authors and/publishers exists in more then library to find similarities among them. Resource Identification FAST - National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences Islamabad Campus 8

Leveraging Semantic web in Digital and Social Era  Idea of Semantic Web was presented in 2001 in Journal “The Scientism America” By Sir Tim Burns Lee Father of World Wide Web  “I am very happy to see my child growing” Sir Lee said in an interview to BBC in July 2009 FYI-I Final Evaluation Presentation : 31st December,

Leveraging Semantic web in Digital and Social Era FAST - National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences Islamabad Campus 11 Integrate information based on different metadata sources, e.g., bibliographic descriptions, user profiles, bookmarks, controlled vocabulary; this can be achieved with high quality semantics, i.e., highly and meaning fully connected information. Provide interoperability with other systems (not only digital libraries) on either metadata or communication level, or both; using RDF as common denominator between digital libraries and other services can support both metadata and communication interoperability. Deliver more robust, user friendly and adaptable search and browsing interfaces empowered by semantics (legacy, formal, and social annotations), community interactions and user profiles, and reasoning and recommendations engines.

Leveraging Semantic web in Digital and Social Era The purpose of applying Semantic Web Technologies in digital resource sharing systems are: Defining resources and their types Automatically classification of digital resources Intelligent findings of the resources Finding similarities between users Identifying user’s groups with respect to interests Sharing of Information using open link data Applying Semantic Web Services for identifying right resource collection Applying Web Services for information sharing FAST - National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences Islamabad Campus 12

FAST - National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences Islamabad Campus 13 Using Semantic Web with Digital Resource Management Systems An overview of functionalities

Leveraging Semantic web in Digital and Social Era  A Knowledge base of Digital Systems contains information about digital objects (e-books, articles…) and users (research and study areas  This Information needs to be represent in machine readable format in order to enable automatic processing on these objects' data.  Relational Database systems lacks metadata that helps the computers for automatic processing.  We want automatic classification of digit objects and their relation ships with the users. suggestions in Prof John’s Case.  In order to perform automatic suggestions, machine needs to understand Prof. John’s Profile FAST - National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences Islamabad Campus 14

Leveraging Semantic web in Digital and Social Era  Semantic Web Technologies provides:  Standard ways for publishing your research on web-pages.  Global Identification to Books, Journals, Articles, Authors, Publishers through string based IRI.  Semantic Web Technologies allows:  Finding similar authors from two or more then two databases based on their IRIs  Like C.J Date in LOC will be C.J Date in NUCES Library.  This is not because of similar name as their could be two C.J Date with similar names. Leveraging Semantic web in Digital and Social Era  FAST NU Islamabad Campus received new books on Artificial Intelligence, Semantic Web Technologies, Database Systems and Business Intelligence.  Librarian at FAST NU Islamabad is on leave.  Books has been processed but no one knows about these new books at campus.  We want that absence of person should not restrict this information. An automatic should be generated to interested groups and users about these arrivals.  Semantic Web Technologies (Ontologies & Taxonomies) allows automatic classification of users in accompany with rules.  Upon this classification similar type of users can be derived like users with research area of LIS and students of Computational Intelligence. Leveraging Semantic web in Digital and Social Era  All data is not present at all points due to reality of its huge weight at the world-wide-web.  Data / Information sharing become more important & useful, because all data can’t be stored in each library.  Semantic Web Technologies (XML/RDF – SPARQL and SPARQL end points) allows publishing of data that is accessible in applications.  Semantic Web provides data sharing technologies and querying protocol that enable point to point querying of data without extra programming efforts.  DBPidea and DBLP for Computer Science are example of Semantic Web Data Storage and sharing applications. Leveraging Semantic web in Digital and Social Era D2R Server is a tool for publishing relational databases on the Semantic Web. D2R Server has been developed in Java and Support MySQL DBMS as storage engine. It enables RDF and HTML browsers to navigate the content of the database, and allows applications to query the database using the SPARQL query language.
