Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl The Rules of Engagement

6 Rounds Each round of the HRRB lasts about 15 minutes when all goes well.

The beginning of each round Team members enter and sit at designated seats. Alternates sit close by. Coaches sit near their team.

Turn off cell phones Refrain from talking Remain silent, avoiding any interruptions or questions Moderator addresses guests and visitors to:

Announcement to begin round Moderator opens sealed envelope for that round. Moderator welcomes everyone and introduces self, scorekeeper, and console judge.

Console judge Sits at the desk (table) between the two teams facing the console unit. Holds the buzzer in one hand and a stop watch in the other

Console Judge Asks team members to buzz in to test their buzzer one at a time. Identifies each team member by color and number (such as red 1-5 or yellow 1-5). Presses the console buzzer to clear it after each team member buzzes in.

Score keeper Records team names on the white board score sheet and on the coaches’ verification forms.

Students may hold the buzzer. Students have 10 seconds to buzz in. Student must wait to be acknowledged by the console judge before rendering an answer. The answer must be given within 10 seconds by the student who buzzed in. If the answer is incorrect, the question will be repeated for the other team. They will have ten seconds to answer after buzzing in. If neither team buzzes in, the moderator will answer the question and proceed to the next question. Moderator Reads the Rules of the Game

If a contestant buzzes before the completion of a question, the moderator stops reading and, after being recognized, the contestant must answer immediately. If an incorrect answer is given, the moderator reads the entire question and the opposing team has an opportunity to answer the question within 10 seconds. Rules of the Game continued

Any concern about an answer to a question MUST be addressed by the student to the COACH before the next question is asked. The student will get the attention of the coach by raising his/her hand. The moderator’s decision is final. Rules of the Game

Moderator Wait for loud horn to begin round Select the question sheet for the announced round. Then say “Let us begin. Question 1, In the book…”

During the round Moderator reads questions. At end of question the console judge starts stop watch. A student buzzes in within 10 seconds. Console judge announces color and number of person to answer the question. Console judge starts stop watch. Team member has 10 seconds to answer.

If the answer is correct… Moderator affirms the answer is correct Console judge clears the console by pressing buzzer Console judge clears the stop watch Score keeper records 10 points on score sheet for answering team

If the answer is incorrect… Moderator states the answer is incorrect. Moderator announces that the question will be read in its entirety for the opposing team. Console judge clears the console by pressing the buzzer. Moderator re-reads the question in its entirety and the opposing team has the opportunity to respond

If someone buzzes in before moderator has read entire question Moderator stops reading immediately Console judge identifies team member’s number and color (red or yellow) Person must answer promptly.

If an answer is unclear Moderator can ask student, once, for more information. Moderator may seek help from console judge and scorekeeper. If moderator does not feel the answer given matches the answer on the sheet, the moderator informs the student the answer is incorrect.

Challenge If an answer is challenged by a team member to their coach The moderator may seek help by asking someone in the hall to verify the answer that the student has challenged
