Ser and Estar Molly Bendalin

Uses Ser and Estar both mean to be, but are not interchangeable Ser is used to express the idea of permanence such as inherent or unchanging qualities and characteristics Estar is used to express temporality, including qualities or conditions that change with time.

Ser D- Description (essential questions that define a person) O-Occupation (Permanent occupation) C-Characteristic (Physical appearance) T-Time (Days, dates, hours) O-Origin (Where a person is from or material something is made from) R-Relationship (Even after someone dies or breaks up)

Ser- Examples Yo soy alta, morena y delgada – I am tall, dark skinned and thin. Mi padre era jardinero. – My father was a gardener. Amalia es inteligente. – Amalia is smart. Ayer fue mi cumpleanos. – Yesterday was my birthday. Celia es de Espana. – Celia is from Spain. Lynne es mi madre. – Lynne is my mother.

Estar P- Position (Physical position or posture a person or thing is in) L- Location (Where the object is temporarily or permanently) A- Action (Used to describe an ongoing action) C- Condition (Physical or mental) E- Emotion (How a person is feeling at a certain moment)

Estar- Examples Mi abuela esta sentada. – My grandmother is sitting down. El bano esta a la derecha de la sala. – The bathroom is to the right of the living room. Estoy lavando los platos sucios. – I am washing the dirty dishes. Estoy tan cansada esta manana. – I am so tired this morning. Estoy triste. – I am sad.

Ser and Estar with Adjectives Ser is used with adjectives to describe inherent, expected qualities. – Como son tus padres? What are your parents like? Estar is used to describe temporary or variable qualities, or a change in appearance or condition. – Como estas, Miguel? How are you, Miguel?

Ser and Estar with descriptive adjectives With most descriptive adjectives, either ser or estar can be used, but the meaning of each statement is different. Julio es alto – Julio is tall. With ser, it is more permanent. Julio is tall, it does not say he is tall now, or he has gotten tall. Ay, que alta estas, Adriana! – How tall you're getting, Adriana For estar, it is more temporary. In this moment, or in this amount of time, Adriana has gotten tall, not that generally they are an tall person permanently.
