Alvah Bessie American novelist and journalist Wrote screenplays for Warner Brothers in the mid/late 1940’s Career ended in 1947, imprisoned, blacklisted and named as one of Hollywood Ten

Herbert J. Biberman Joined Theatre Guild in 1928 Directed and wrote screenplays for B movies 1947 accused of Communist activities Sentenced to 6 months in prison in 1950 Banished from Hollywood

Lester Cole Polish immigrant Co- founded Screenwriters Guild in 1933 Blacklisted in 1947 and sentenced to one year in prison Taught screenwriting at University of California in Berkeley

Edward Dmytryk Director and editor 1948 blacklisted in U.S. and moved to England Returned to U.S. in 1951 and appeared before HUAAC (tried all the Hollywood Ten) Dropped from blacklist in late 1951

Blacklisting Hollywood Blacklisting began in 1947 when a group of ten Hollywood professionals were accused of incorporating Communism into their works. All were sentenced to no more than a year in prison and were tried by the HUAAC.
