AS History Matters AS History Matters The Outbreak of War Despite the mistrust of the King it seemed the Constitution of 1791 would have survived. However, what prevented this was the outbreak of war with Austria. Almost everything that happened from this point onwards can be linked to war with Austria. The war directly led to the fall of the monarchy, civil war and the terror.

AS History Matters AS History Matters Austrian Committee Marie Antoinette known as ‘the only man in the family’ hoped for war against her own brother! She hoped France would be defeated and Louis would recover his old powers. There were also rumours that the country’s foreign policy was being run by an ‘Austrian committee’ headed by Marie Antoinette and that secret agents were being sent to the emigres and Vienna to plot counter-revolution.
