Know Why and how video taping can be beneficial in analysis of both teaching and student learning. Deepen understanding of analysis of teaching and learning Deepen understanding of reflective practice Do Examine the role of reflection and the Beginning Teacher Portfolio Examine questions/strategies that will aid in reflection. Rate yourself as a reflective practitioner. Procedure Read current literature Reflect

Trios & Share Get into triads according to the playing card you received Share your Student Profiles Rotate until all have shared

Relay Summary The first person to share begins He/she records a word or phrase that shows the modifications that were made for the highlighted students. Hands off to the next person until all modifications have been listed. Last person to respond stands up

Ask a trio to get with another trio Generate a list of modifications AS you were discussing your student profiles, you probably heard about the special adaptations made by your group. Now use the relay summary form to create a list of those modifications to share with the entire group Give the small groups a chance to complete the relay Then create a master list on chart paper –group representative will stand until all items on summary have been shared

Analysis of Teaching and Learning Describe how you used knowledge of learning to plan and revise the instruction of your profiled students

Likert Scale Mentors As Reflective Practitioners

The Art of Reflection

Tie into the portfolio and the mentoring process New teachers have been exposed to reflection more than we ever were Stress that it is an “art” that needs to be developed

Review a process to see if the desired goals were met Make learning visible Complete the learning cycle of an event Put school issues in perspective Find a more considered response to an event Achieve meaning and understanding Add value to self and to performance Move from novice to expert

Why is reflection important? We live life forward but understand it backwards. The complexity of the world is so great that no one person can figure it out.

Video clip one I am Sam Beginning to diaper falling off. Movement from order to chaos Look at video clip and think about the things that Sam has control over and things that he has no control over

Dealing with a few issues Dealing with many issues Sam was in an LRE and little control over his life what about you and your school issue----Brainstorm about initiatives from Federal, State, and Local school system

School Initiatives Brainstorm National State Local Record in your journal the initiatives that impact your life as an educator

Sphere of Influence/ Sphere of Concern I have no control over… I have control over…

Stress There is no such thing! It is our response to a stimuli. We must choose our response.

1.It is our response to a stimuli- we must choose our response 2. Decide how much energy we want to invest in our sphere of influence. Clip #2 baby crying to lady with the scarf----this child had different teachers segue to question—who are your mentors?

Reflection Reflect on a mentor/teacher who helped you…

Video clip #3 Sam in park to Sam in restaurant with the little girl Sam is different So are your students tie in with the profiling activity

Review a process to see if the desired goals were met Find a more considered response to an event Add value to your performance Move from novice to expert

Portfolio implications These are the major reflection components of the portfolio. Just as you have highlighted two students, so will your beginning teacher

Ms. I Walk the Line Read the last two pages of Ms. I Walk the Line’s portfolio Rate her self-reflection 1-4. (1 is low and 4 is high) Why did you choose that score?

Journal Write about one strategy/idea to help your beginning teacher become more reflective?
