1. Reading Literature Informational Foundational Skills 2. Writing 3. Speaking and Listening 4. Language Four strands

Prompting and support are provided by the teacher as students learn to read, write, and discuss their learning Identifying topics and details in text read or heard Asking questions to deepen their understanding of text read or heard Participating in classroom discussions following agreed upon rules The big ideas

Reading Behaviors Print Concepts (see packet) Picking up and repeating a patterned text Use picture clues Left to right directionality One to one correspondence mCLASS letter coming home on Tuesday

Level 5-6 Text

Reader’s Workshop Beginning late during the 1 st quarter, students will be grouped based on their reading abilities/needs. All Kdg. teachers are teaching the “basics” of Reader’s Workshop, using the same language. Centers that students may be working in: read to someone, read to self, listen to reading and other literacy based centers while other students are working in reading groups.

Developing Writing Skills Use a combination of drawing and writing to express ideas with supporting details in writing multiple sentences about a topic. Provide reactions or reflections on a topic. Correctly form upper and lowercase letters. Use consistent punctuation and spacing. Use capitalization correctly. Spell sight words correctly. Spell simple words using dominant sounds. Write legibly.

Types of Writing Simple pattern books All about books Opinion writing How to books Narrative

Kindergarten Math Content Standards Instructional time will focus on two critical areas: Representing, relating, and operating on whole numbers, initially with sets of objects. Describing shapes and space

Math Develop number sense to 20 (Read, write, represent number of objects with a written numeral, greater than, less than) Compose and decompose numbers (11-19 into 10’s and ones.) Fluently add and subtract within 5 Count to 100 (by 1’s and 10’s) Identify and describe shapes (two and three dimensional, circles, triangles, rectangles, squares, hexagons, cones and cylinders)

New to social studies is the exploration of content through five strands. Five strands include: History Geography and Environmental Literacy Civics and Government Culture Economics and Personal Financial Literacy Studies Weekly magazine $6

Areas of Focus for Grade K: Animals Two by Two Investigating Properties Weather Science instruction continues to be inquiry-based

Homework PLEASE check red daily folders EVERY NIGHT!!!!! About 20 minutes nightly Read and retell a story nightly Complete any unfinished class work Math homework, depending on lesson

Discipline Your child has the opportunity to make positive choices each day. Students will be able to move their frog up the tree for positive choices with the end goal of being able to attend Fun Friday centers. Children may need to move their frog down the tree for major misbehaviors. The administration will handle fighting, disrespect, and other serious misbehaviors immediately.

Standards Based Grading Students will receive a grade of 1,2,3, or 4. These grades DO NOT correlate to A, B, C etc. A level 3 indicates that a student is on grade level, and a 4 is significantly and consistently above grade level expectations. A score of 1 or 2 indicates that the student is not meeting the benchmarks.

Communication I will return phone calls, s, and notes within 24 hours while tracked in. Please send notes to school in the red daily folder, NOT in backpacks. Please “favorite”/bookmark the class website:

Red Folders Go home daily & need to be returned daily Please initial the behavior calendar and return folder to school every day Please check for important papers and/or notes Please put lunch money/book orders in the pencil bag.

Tuesday Folders Will go home every Tuesday Please remove all work and important papers. Classroom newsletters will be ed on Tuesday. Return the folder to school on Wednesday.

Lunch and Snack Please pre-pay for lunch Special treats (cookies, ice cream, etc.) may only be bought on Fridays Healthy Snacks Water

Birthdays You may bring in a small snack (must be store bought) for your child’s birthday Mini-cupcakes, cookies, or donuts are perfect

Volunteers All volunteers must be cleared through WCPSS before working with students in the classroom/lunch bunch Field trip chaperones must also be cleared by WCPSS Visit the media center to register
