Using iCONN with Science Embedded Performance Tasks (CMT,CAPT) Presented by: Janet Roche Simsbury High School

Using iCONN with Science Embedded Performance Tasks (CMT,CAPT) Science Tasks aligned with Information Literacy Framework Science Embedded Performance Tasks Janet Roche

Teaching Science Through Inquiry CMT--Grades 3-8: 1 task each grade that includes 1-3 labs and a suggestion that students deepen their understanding of the lab with nonfiction research Grade 4: Go With the Flow Grade 6: Dig In! CAPT --Grade 9:3 tasks, Grade 10:2 tasks that include a laboratory activity and a science, technology and society investigation Grade 9: CT Brownfield Sites Grade 10: Human Population Dynamics

Experiment vs. Research How do I include research when students have hands- on with labs and I have so much content to cover? Some inquiries are best answered by experiments and others by research The task often includes suggested web sites. This presentation will include suggested iCONN databases. iCONN is available free to schools, libraries and homes in CT so it minimizes the Digital Divide

Grade 4: Go With the Flow Task Experiment #1: Different ways to light a bulb Experiment #2: Which materials conduct electricity Experiment #3: Investigating Your Own Questions Conduct further research on electric circuits to enhance literacy skills and deepen science understanding

Investigate Through Research Search terms: batteries iCONN databases: Kids InfoBits howstuffworks.com

Many types of batteries have been invented since Different batteries are designed for long life, high power, or recharging ease, depending on the application. How It Works Further Readings  -- Borton, Paula and Vicky Cave. The Usborne Book of Batteries and Magnets. Tulsa, OK: EDC, (JUV/YA)  -- Marshall Brain's "How Stuff Works. Source Citation: "Batteries." The Blackbirch Encyclopedia of Science & Invention. 4 vols. Blackbirch Press, Reproduced in Kids InfoBits. Detroit: Gale, servlet/KidsInfoBits

Grade 6: Dig In! Task Experiment #1: Relationship Between Soil Properties and Water Absorption Experiment #2: Relationship Between Soil Properties and Water Percolation Rate Research: What soil is, where it comes from, different soil types, soil properties and absorbency

Investigate Through Research Search Terms: soil research, soil layers, soil composition, sand iCONN databases: InfoTrac Junior Edition, Discovering Collection

Headings in article lead to other search terms Soil formation Soil profiles and horizons (horizontal layers) Aging soils Soil categories Soil groups and agriculture Life in the soil

Mineral composition of soil: sand, silt, clay

Grade 9: CT Brownfield Sites Task Find a CT Brownfield site near your hometown Research one of the potential contaminants Formulate a question about the site that may be answered through scientific investigation Design a scientific investigation about a brownfield site

Investigate Through Research Search terms: brownfield iCONN Databases: National Newspapers -- Hartford Courant, InfoTrac for Students

Grade 10: Human Population Dynamics Task Design a Power Point presentation that compares the population dynamics in an underdeveloped country and a developed country Interpret population growth data from the U.S. Census Bureau website Research three factors that affect population changes in one of the countries Research how one technological advance might affect changes from in one of the countries Take a position: Did technology have a positive or negative affect on population dynamics Support with evidence Cite sources

Investigate Through Research Search terms: South Africa - Country Report Desalination Desalination and South Africa iCONN databases: Student Research Center Discovering Collection InfoTrac Student Edition

Read about the country to learn of technological advance Agriculture: Scarce water sources combined with droughts make production variable from year to year, and only 12 percent of the land is arable.
