Students of the program can study a variety of topics in this ideal environment. ■ University Overview ① Outline Utsunomiya University is comprised of 4 faculties, 4 graduate schools and 12 Institutes for education and research. The Faculty of International Studies, being the only faculty in all national universities in Japan, promotes comprehensive studies of international societies and cultures. The Faculty of Education has a long history of training educators and offers specialized programs that include practical skills training. The Faculty of Engineering conducts leading-edge research and serves as a core facility for the industrial center. Utsunomiya is surrounded by natural beauty, with the Kinugawa River to the east, the Nasu Mountain Range to the north, and world-famous Nikko to the west. With a strong academic tradition, as suggested by its proximity to the Ashikaga School, Japan’s earliest-known university, Utsunomiya University has become renowned for cutting-edge technologies such as those being developed at the Technopolis Center. ■ Outline of the Program ① Program Feature This course is offered by the Center for International Exchange of the Utsunomiya University, aiming to help students to improve and develop their Japanese Language skills. and to deepen their specialized knowledge of Japanese language, culture and society. ② Quota 12 students ・ University recommendation ……………6 ・ Embassy recommendation ……………6 ③ Requirements for Applicants Followings are requirements for this program, and both should be satisfied by the applicants. Applicants should be majoring in a field related to Japanese language or culture at their home university. Applicants should have the intermediate or higher level of Japanese proficiency (higher than N2 level of JLPT) that will enable them to pursue the program and study with Japanese students. ●

④ Goal To improve and develop their Japanese language skills. To deepen their specialized knowledge of Japanese language, culture and society. Besides these subjects, there are various extra-curricular activities for international students offered by the Utsunomiya University (see ⑨ ).

⑦ Academic Guidance System (1) Course Advisors and Coordinators Yumiko Umeki (Center for International Exchange) Kazuhiko Yoshida (Center for International Exchange) Course advisors are responsible for organizing the Japanese Studies Course, and help each student to make their study plan and/or decide their research topic. They also coordinate the course at the whole university level. (2) Research Supervisors Research supervisors give students academic advice according to their research topic, and are decided after their arrival. ⑧ Course Requirements and Certificate of Completion Each student is required to take both required subjects (8 credits) and elective subjects (16 credits or more), and give an oral presentation on their academic report at the end of the course. Each student who has completed a course of study will receive the Certificate of Completion. ⑨ Extracurricular Activities Students may participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities, including skiing lessons, sightseeing excursions, and opportunities to interact with local residents. ■ Housing ● Condition There is an international student dormitory at Utsunomiya University. However MEXT scholarship students are advised to rent a room at their own expense when there is no vacancy in the dormitory. ● Room rent (on average) 1-bed room 30,000yen/month ● Other costs You may have to pay triple the amount of money for cleaning deposit, reward and handling charge. You may have to deposit 15,000yen to your gas company to use the gas. Sign up for house insurance, which costs 4,500-9,000yen.
