Your Co-op Job Search and SCDC Policies Steinbright Career Development Center

SCDC Drexel University Introduction What and where is SCDC? Role of Co-op Coordinator How to identify your coordinator Login to one.drexel.edu . Click on School Services to access BannerWeb, choose Steinbright Career Development Center Services. Click on any of the links—coordinator name will appear in yellow box in upper right-hand corner SCDC Drexel University

Co-op Cycles (Fall/Winter or Spring/Summer) Cycles are set the winter before you’re scheduled for co-op. You will be notified by letter. 5 year students: Winter 2005 4 year students: Winter 2006 SWAP POLICY: Students must find someone with the opposite cycle in their major and co-op concentration (5 year/4 year) who is willing to switch Deadline is February 21, 2005 SCDC Drexel University

SCDC Drexel University Co-op Eligibility Must successfully complete UNIV 101 or Co-op 001 (transfer students) Maintain good academic standing and be an active student [no holds, enrolled FULL-TIME as a matriculated student in a degree seeking major] Complete a pre-registration meeting with your coordinator before EACH co-op Have completed Student Co-op Agreement on file in the SCDC Secure job RELATED to your major Complete resume in SCDConline (for SCDC job postings) SCDC Drexel University

SCDC Drexel University All Non-US Citizens Register with ISSS (International Student and Scholars Services) to verify immigration status. Depending on visa type, may or may not be eligible for co-op. ISSS will determine that. SCDC Drexel University

International Students With F-1 and J-1 Visas Must register with ISSS and update ISSS with any changes in address, academic or visa status, etc. When co-op employment is found, MUST get work authorization from ISSS PRIOR to beginning job. Failure to do this will result in being out of status and will probably require you to leave country and re-enter with a new I-20. If terminated from a co-op position, must notify ISSS and co-op coordinator immediately. Those not locating a co-op position who do not sign a petition and whose job search journals are not approved will be out of status and must see ISSS immediately to discuss situation. SCDC Drexel University

SCDC Drexel University Changes in Major Students start change of major process with academic advisor Co-op coordinators sign off on Change of Major form-- Students can come to SCDC during drop-in hours to get their forms signed A change in major will only result in a change in co-op cycle if required by new academic program Changes in co-op cycle may require documentation from the academic advisor with a reason for the change Since co-op positions must be related to a student’s major, important to update records in a timely manner SCDC Drexel University

I. Steps involved in the SCDConline Search Why use the on-line system? Search and apply for jobs Check to see what interviews you received and schedule on and off campus interviews Rank your interviews Pick up and sign your blue form SCDC Drexel University

Reasons to use online system Drexel has developed numerous jobs in various majors with employers already willing to hire co-op students. Even if there are fewer jobs available within your major, there ARE still opportunities available. Able to view past student evaluations of employers. SCDC Drexel University

SCDConline Job Search Search for Jobs Login to one.drexel.edu . Click on School Services to access BannerWeb, choose Steinbright Career Development Center Services, then Search for Jobs. Input your search criteria (eg. location, major, classification), then click the search button. Be aware that submitting more criteria will produce fewer results. A list of jobs that meets your criteria will result. Job Title, Company Name, General company location. First line of the job description. SCDC Drexel University

SCDConline Job Search Apply to Jobs From your results page, you may add jobs to your shopping cart to view later, or you may click into the full job description and apply to the job directly. Adding jobs to the shopping cart is not the same as applying to the job. To apply for a job, you MUST click on REQUEST AN INTERVIEW. You will be prompted to select a résumé. You should apply to 20 jobs through SCDConline. SCDC Drexel University

SCDC Drexel University

SCDConline Job Search Scheduling Interviews Click on Maintain your Interview Requests to find out if you were selected for an interview. For each job to which you applied, you will see “Selected” or “No Employer Interest”. On-campus interviews (A-round only) should be scheduled online. Off-campus interview selections provide the employer contact information. It is your responsibility to schedule your off-campus interviews. You are required to attend ALL interviews. Interviews may not be scheduled during class or exam periods SCDC Drexel University

SCDC Drexel University

SCDConline Job Search Job Offers Click on Maintain Your Interview Requests to rank jobs. You will see “Job Offer”, “Qualified Alternate”, and salary offer, or “No Employer Interest”. Salaries CANNOT be negotiated Rank the jobs for which you were ranked in order of your preference. Ranking a job means that you accept that job should you be paired with it. Don’t rank a job that you don’t want to take. If you have found a job independently, do not rank a job in SCDConline. Must see coordinator to decline a job SCDC Drexel University

II. Steps Involved in Your Independent Job Search Why Do an Independent Search? Assessment of Values and Goals Identify and Research Companies Contact Companies and Follow-up Summary SCDC Drexel University

Reasons to do an independent search Not guaranteed a co-op job through the SCDConline system Tailor one to meet specific career goals A difficult economy Identify jobs outside the tri-state area SCDC Drexel University

SCDC Drexel University An Assessment Identifies your values, goals, experiences, and accomplishments Provides invaluable information to facilitate career decisions and prepares you to market your background effectively Helps you identify motivators and preferences so that you can make a better match between your personality and your work setting Needs to be specific and focused SCDC Drexel University

SCDC Drexel University SCDC Career Counselor Offers four different assessment tools to students Reviews results and counsels on career decision Free to students and alumni SCDC Drexel University

SCDC Drexel University What Do You Want? What do I want to do/learn? What kind of work environment do I want? What type of company do I want to work in (large or small)? Where (geographically) do I want to work? Be creative and think of different words to describe the field or position in which you are interested (or fields or positions that will help you gain relevant experience.) Just entering “jobs”, for example, will quickly overwhelm you. Entering the library to search for “jobs” might lead to similar problems. BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING keyword examples: Medical institutions, Medicine, Dentistry, Healthcare, Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Engineering, Veterinary Medicine, Law, Neurology And variations and related areas under all of these. On the other hand, you may need to enter “co-op” as a keyword or part of a keyword phrase. Keep in mind that “co-op, internship, intern, and work study” are all words that may describe positions that fit your search criteria. SCDC Drexel University

SCDC Drexel University Career Library Library Assistant, Poliana Irizarry Room 130, Hagerty Library 215-895-6843 She can: Direct you towards job resources Helps you navigate on-line databases Notice: Not a job finder. SCDC Drexel University

Tools to use for the Independent Job Search Networking (friends, relatives, faculty, alumni, co-workers, professional associations, etc) Internet Printed Material Career Fairs (Drexel offers two job/career fairs on campus-in October and April; Upcoming Career Fair Date: Wednesday, April 6th, 2005 Time: 10:00am - 3:00pm Location: John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center at 33rd and Market Streets Cold-calling Companies SCDC Drexel University

Things to remember with Cold- Calling They say, “we’re not hiring” Ask if they have any leads, referrals or if they know anyone in the field If you get their voicemail… Leave your name and number and state the reason for your call Your contact does not call you back so you need to follow up SCDC Drexel University

Follow-up with Everyone! Send thank you letters Keep in touch with contacts made through networkinng SCDC Drexel University

International Co-op Program Not the same as Study abroad. Enhance skill set by gaining international experience and improving foreign language skills. Start 9 to 12 months prior to going abroad. Refer to Career Development Manual for more information. Contact Susan Braun (x2185) to discuss eligibility. SCDC Drexel University

How do you ensure CO-OP CREDIT once you find a job? If you are matched with a job through SCDConline, a Student Agreement & Registration form (BLUE FORM) will be generated for you. You must sign this. If you find a job independently: Prior approval from coordinator Blue form Job Description Offer Letter Signed Employer Agreement form International students (F-1 or J-1 visa) must also get work authorization ES&P (once job is completed) SCDC Drexel University

SCDC Drexel University What if you don’t have a job when co-op begins? ‘Petition’ for Co-op Credit Blue form or Signed ‘petition’ is due no later than 2nd week of the scheduled co-op term If you do not have a job, signing the ‘petition’ lets us know you are still searching for a position—similar to getting an ‘extension’ on an assignment Petition also lets us know you are still an active student This required contact better ensures regular, individualized services for students needing assistance with their job search Students without jobs, who do not sign petitions on time, will NOT receive co-op credit and will be considered Inactive with the university (even if a job is found later). This will have serious consequences for co-op as well as Billing, Financial Aid, ISSS, etc SCDC Drexel University

SCDC Drexel University What if you don’t have a job when co-op begins?(cont). Job Search Journal If you have not secured a co-op work experience by the end of B-round, you must make an appointment to meet with your coordinator Coordinator will supply you with all of the materials and guidelines to begin your job search journal SCDC Drexel University

SCDC Drexel University What if you don’t have a job when co-op begins?(cont). Job Search Journal If you secure a co-op after the second week of the co-op term, you are required to submit your journal along with other required paperwork If job search journal does not meet SCDC standards, you may receive a failed work term for co-op Critical to work with coordinator if you do not secure a co-op SCDC Drexel University

SCDC Probation Process If a student is terminated while on co-op or behaves in an unprofessional manner, the situation will be investigated by a co-op coordinator If the occurrence is considered to be a minor offense, the student will receive a letter of reprimand from the SCDC If a more serious offense and/or a termination, the student may be placed on co-op probation Terms of probation are tailored to the situation, but can include failure of a co-op cycle, a written assignment, removal from the co-op program, etc SCDC Drexel University

SCDC Drexel University Once you’re working… Notify your coordinator if you have concerns, questions, etc Complete your Employment Summary & Planner (ES&P) in final month of employment. Meet with coordinator to review this. Employers will also be evaluating you Get approval from coordinator to participate in next cycle (if applicable) SCDC Drexel University
