THE PRESENT PERFECT V. PAST SIMPLE CLAIRE ELIZABETH WALLIS

WHAT DO WE USE THE PAST SIMPLE FOR?

THE PAST SIMPLE WE USE THE PAST SIMPLE FOR AN ACTION WHICH STARTED AND FINISHED IN THE SPECIFIC PAST. I FINISHED WORK AT 2PM YESTERDAY. I SAW VICTORIA THIS MORNING. AT SCHOOL I DIDN’T LIKE MATHS.

WHAT DO WE USE THE PRESENT PERFECT FOR?

THE PRESENT PERFECT WE USE THE PRESENT PERFECT FOR LIFE EXPERIENCE. I’VE BEEN TO PARIS 3 TIMES SO FAR. WE ALSO USE IT FOR A NON-SPECIFIC PAST ACTION. “I’VE ALREADY HAD A COFFEE, THANKS” WE USE IT IF THE TIME HAS NOT FINISHED. THE PHOTOCOPIER HAS BROKEN DOWN TWICE THIS WEEK.

FOR AND SINCE WE OFTEN USE THE PRESENT PERFECT WITH FOR AND SINCE TO INDICATE THE TIME. FOR = PERIOD – I HAVE KNOWN HIM FOR 10 YEARS. SINCE = SPECIFIC POINT IN TIME – I HAVE KNOWN HIM SINCE 2001.

FOR, SINCE AND AGO FOR IS POSSIBLE IN BOTH THE PAST SIMPLE AND PRESENT PERFECT. TOM CRUISE AND NICOLE KIDMAN WERE MARRIED FOR 10 YEARS. TOM CRUISE AND KATIE HOLMES HAVE BEEN MARRIED FOR 4 YEARS. SINCE IS ONLY POSSIBLE IN THE PRESENT PERFECT. THEY HAVE BEEN MARRIED SINCE 2007. AGO IS ONLY POSSIBLE IN THE PAST SIMPLE. THEY GOT MARRIED 4 YEARS AGO.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AMERICAN AND BRITISH ENGLISH U.K. IN THE PRESENT PERFECT, THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE PAST PARTICIPLES BEEN AND GONE. BEEN = WENT AND RETURNED I HAVE BEEN TO PARIS TWICE . GONE = STILL THERE SARAH HAS GONE TO PARIS. SHE IS COMING BACK NEXT WEEK. U.S. BEEN IS NOT USED. GONE IN USED IN BOTH CASES. I HAVE GONE TO PARIS TWICE. (CAME BACK)
