Indirect questions When we ask for information, we often say Do you know …? / Could you tell me …? etc. If you begin a question like this, the word order is different from a simple question. Compare: Where has Tom gone? Do you know where Tom has gone? part of a longer sentence
What time is it? Do you know ____________ ? Who is that woman? I don’t know _________________. Where can I find Linda? Can you tell me ____________________ ? How much will it cost? Have you any idea ___________________ ? what time it is who that woman is where I can find Linda how much it will cost
Be careful with do/does/did questions: What time does the film begin? Do you know what time _____________ ? What do you mean? Please explain what _________. Why did Ann leave early? I wonder why ____________. the film begins you mean Ann left early
Use if or whether where there is no other question word (what, why etc.) Did anybody see you? Do you know if (or whether) anybody saw you?

I don’t know ………………………………. Where does Carol live? Have you any idea ………………………... Where did I park the car? I can’t remember ………………………….
