Writer’s Warm-up Grab your Writer’s Notebooks for the following warm-up: One minute the teacher was talking about the Civil War. And the next minute he was gone. Just vanished— along with everyone else over the age of 14 in a 100- mile radius around South Riding, VA. In one instant adults were gone and we were all that was left. Begin writing your story where this has left off. Stay in the first person. What would you do? How would society survive? What would you do to survive? Things to consider: Washington D.C. is roughly 45 miles away; Parents/Adults would be gone; There would probably be accidents around the area from grown- ups disappearing; Television & News wouldn’t be working--unless run by children 14 & Under.

Gone By Michael Grant  Looking for a new series?  5 books  Dystopian  Male, first person  As soon as you turn 14 you disappear.  Children have to rebuild society. Mini Book Talk!

Today’s Plan:  Vocab 1-5 definitions.  Choose Book Club Books.  Review and take Vocab 1-5 Formative.  Create Book Club Schedule.  Read Book Club Books.

Vocabulary Set 4!  Please take out a pencil.  We will begin Vocabulary Set 4 for Quarter 3.  First formative will be today.

acquire Verb: To gain ownership of something; to get by one’s own efforts or actions. Noun: acquisition: Something that is acquired.

Comprise Verb: 1. To form; to make up 2. To consist of or include

Correspond Verb: 1. To match; to be equal to. 2. To exchange letters with another person. Noun: Correspondence: the act of exchanging letters; the letters that are exchanged.

Vocabulary Sentences  Take the next few minutes to write a sentence for each vocabulary word we did today.  If there is more than one part of speech, then just choose one to write.

Book Club: Quarter 3!  Today we will be starting BOOK CLUBS!  In order to make choices you will circulate around the room to read the covers (front and back) of the books.  What to look for:  Determine the genre based off of the description.  Read the first paragraph.  Five word rule.  Walk away with top 4 choices.

Book Club Titles 1. Girl Stolen 2. When the Emperor was Divine 3. Unwind 4. Miss. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children 5. Miss Jane Autobiography 6. Flip

Review!  This word tells us what makes up other things. It is helpful to say, “this cake is _____ of flour, sugar, milk, and baking powder.”  This word tells us how you gain something.  This word tells us if you are able to do something, or if you have the necessary tools to do something.  This word has two meanings. It can be used to mean equal to something else. It can also mean to exchange letters.  This word can mean to make someone an enemy or to make them dislike you.

Book Clubs  Start Date: 01/22/15 (B)  End Date: 02/18/15 (B)  Determine dates to have your book read by.  Write them down on your copy.  Write them down on the master copy.  Turn in the master copy to me.
