INTEGRATING QUOTES INTO YOUR WRITING

1. Be Selective Carefully consider the quotes that will best support your point. Don’t feel the need to support every point with a quote, but if there is a key quote that fits a point you are making, use it to your advantage. Eg. Roselily is aware that there are negatives associated with her choice to marry. What is a well- selected quote that supports this? Do not write the quote down yet.

2. Provide context for your quote a.What is happening in the story when your chosen quote occurs? b.Who is the speaker: author, narrator, or character? c.Use a strong verb to give more meaning to how the speaker is talking: While Roselily stands at the altar dreaming of a life of respectability, she senses “her children are already gone from her. Not dead, but exalted on a pedestal.” Eg. Write your chosen quote on a sticky note, including the context, speaker, and a strong verb.

3. Always reference your source Use brackets ( ) following the quote to communicate the page, line or act from which you obtained the quote. End punctuation comes after the brackets. While Roselily stands at the altar dreaming of a life of respectability, she senses “her children are already gone from her. Not dead, but exalted on a pedestal” (p.1016). Eg. On a second sticky note, accurately write the line number(s) of your quote and place it after the first sticky note.

4. Use OEA to make your point Observation – what is the point you are arguing? Evidence – then write the quote Analysis – prove that the quote supports the assertion While Roselily stands at the altar dreaming of a life of respectability, she senses “her children are already gone from her. Not dead, but exalted on a pedestal” (p.1016). Her own challenging experiences aside, Roselily fears that a marriage that cuts her children away from their southern roots will also separate them from her. Eg. Write one sticky note for OBSERVATION, and place it in front of your EVIDENCE (ie. quote) sticky note. Write one sticky note for ANALYSIS and place it after the sticky note with the line number on it.
