Science Vocabulary - Adaptations Created by: Ms. DeVito & Mr. Walpole (Grade 5~Garfield)

adapt (verb) To make a change that improves survival.

environment (noun) The surroundings in which a person, plant, or animal lives.

ecosystem (noun) All of the living (and non-living) things in an area and their interactions.

extinct (adjective) Not existing; completely gone from the earth.

instinct (noun) Behaviors that are known (inherited) without having to learn them.

organism (noun) Any living thing including animals, plants, and insects.

producer (noun) An organism that makes (produces) its own food for energy.

consumer (noun) An organism that cannot make its own food.

decomposer (noun) An organism that gets energy from waste and dead organisms.
