Introduction  Remember how you used to send files over the Bluetooth…  Establish a pairing between the 2 devices.  Send the file.  The other device has to accept the receiving file.  What about the transfer rate?

Introduction  Now gone are the days when the transfer speed was 40-80Kbps.  Wi-Fi Alliance has made this easier by developing the Wi-Fi Direct Specification.

Wi-Fi Direct  No need of a wireless access point or a hotspot.  It embeds a Software Access Point in the device.  Speed: Transfer 700MB in about 5-6 minutes.  Better range coverage.

Hotspot vs Tethering vs Wi-Fi Direct HotspotTetheringWi-Fi Direct One-to-many.One-to-one.One-to-one / One-to- many. Uses Wi-Fi.Uses Bluetooth/USB.Uses Wi-Fi. Used to access the internet. Used to communicate between two devices. Free to use.Billed via mobile network provider. Free to use.

Scenario

WiFile - What we intend to do?  Create an application, where the user selects certain directory in his mobile device as public(accessible to other users).  Other users can connect to the device, browse the file list and download data from that device.

WiFile - What we intend to do?  If successful with initial endeavor, we will also try to implement a security feature:  User authentication via a password.

WiFile – Features and Advantages  Traditional File Exchange replaced with File Sharing.  Peer – to – Peer Communication Model. Works without an Internet Connection.  Free to use.

WiFile - Limitations  Users should have Wi-Fi Direct Capable devices.  Both the users need to have this application to share data.

Wi-Fi Direct - Limitations  Disconnect from existing wifi-network.  The two devices communicating should be within the range of each other.  Will Wi-Fi Direct replace Bluetooth ?
