Intervention Plan for Kindergarten Students ELLA “Early Literacy Learning Activities” Pilot Program for Kindergarten Students Scoring a “2” on the Idaho Reading Indicator

 A Hands-on Family Literacy Event will kick off a school’s At-Home Incentive Program  Family literacy activities will be sent to each participating school on a CD  Invitations will be included for each school to personalize to advertize the event to involve families  After an evening of parent involvement, families will leave with a tote bag filled with an activity guide and literacy materials to use at home to strengthen the literacy skills of each kindergarten student involved  Suggested Incentives: Students could be provided a free book, a gift certificate for an end of the year book fair, or be invited to listen to guest readers at an ice cream social after the activities are completed to encourage the lessons to be completed At-Home Activity Incentive Program

 Family Literacy Activity Event will have directions for parents on 10 activities to work on at-home and can run as centers or stations  10 activity cards describing individual skill building literacy activities for families to participate in are included on this CD  All activities will be based on the five strands of literacy as described in the Idaho Comprehensive Literacy Plan  Activities will be color coded by each strand of literacy  Optional: Students could build a color coded bookmark with beads matching each of the skill colors  A colored bead can be given at each station to add to the string tied on a bookmark that can be completed at the end of the event Family Literacy Activity Night Materials Include:

 Phonemic Awareness  Phonics  Vocabulary  Comprehension  Fluency All skills must tie together to create a strong reader! The Big “5” of Literacy Color Codes:

 Each school/district can determine the format for their literacy night  It is suggested the event be presented as a Family Literacy Event  There is a story time for students and an instructional time for parents  A Power Point will be provided for training (included on the CD)  After the parents receive some information in reading development, parents and students working together and rotate through activities presented by the school staff  Teachers are there as a resource to guide the process and model correct instruction  This is also the opportunity for the parent to learn how to become the “teacher” Family Literacy Activity Night Format:

 Before families leave they will be given a tote bag of at-home literacy activities just like the ones have been involved in during the evening and more  The bag will contain plastic alphabet letters (upper and lower case), an alphabet rainbow, alphabet letter flash cards, and an activity booklet to be completed and returned to their teacher  This will encourage one-on-one learning opportunities at home to reinforce the skills being taught in the classroom  Families can use these same activities to work with younger siblings  Suggestion: A free book could be given to each child once his/her take home activity booklet “ELLA” is completed (additional cost of approximately $1.00) At-Home Activity Incentive Program

 ELLA the Early Literacy Learning Activity Booklet (Color Coded)  26 Plastic Alphabet Letters per set (Upper and Lower Case)  Rainbow Alphabet Chart  Alphabet Flashcards  A chart to track at home reading  Kindergarten Sight Word Flashcards (can be added by school) At-Home Literacy Activity Tote Bag Contents:

Materials to order  Bag with printing $2.20  Plastic letters $2.00 Documents to be done by district (costs may vary)  ELLA Activity Booklet $3.50*  Alphabet Rainbow $0.20  Flashcards $0.35  Bookmarks (optional) $0.25 Total cost per bag: $8.50 *English/Spanish version is larger and costs slightly more Project Cost Estimate Per Child:

 To preserve uniformity and efficacy of this intervention program for this first year, the Idaho State Department of Education is asking that no pages be deleted from this booklet.  The Idaho State Department of Education approves of a district adding materials and instructions to a supplement that may accompany this booklet. A supplement may be added that would list the order items within the original booklet should be introduced to reflect the specific alphabetical order found in a district’s Reading series, and the inclusion of specific supplemental materials that support a district’s Reading curriculum may be added.  Any specific concerns about a section or page of the current Early Literacy Learning Activities document or suggestions for improvement are appreciated and will be addressed in the District Survey on Effectiveness of the ELLA Materials and Program, which will be sent to all those participating in ELLA during the school year. Benefits to Preparing Materials by School or District

 After results from this year’s ELLA Pilot are received, the results will be shared statewide  Title I Stimulus Funding  PTA sponsorship  Mini-grants are available for non-Title I schools  If this program has successful results for kindergarten students, there is a chance it could be expanded to grades 1 st -3 rd  (District feedback is important to this decision) Funding for Providing ELLA to Kindergarten 2’s
