Supporting your child in Maths

The key skills in Maths Students should learn their times tables as this helps support them with other areas of Maths. There are many different ways to get to the answer – don’t worry that you might be ‘unteaching’ them what they’ve learnt. But… ask your child to explain what they have learnt and explain it to you.

Supporting your child in English

Homework Homework project for each unit Completed over the course of the unit; handed in at end of unit. Assessed against National Curriculum levels for reading and writing. Also assessed on independent learning skills.

KS3 English: Specific strategies Encourage them to read every day (and write about what they read). Encourage them to write every day (and read through what they write). Encourage them to draft and re-draft their work.

Encourage them to extend their vocabulary: word of the day, thesaurus, challenging reading materials. Discuss topics and issues with them and encourage them to use standard English and grammar. Encourage them to make notes, mind-maps and complete revision exercises as they go through the year. Encourage them to go beyond standard classwork: extension tasks and independent learning.
