ANGER

Anger  I. What is anger?  II. Is anger a sin?  III. The type of anger  VI. The steps that lead to unjustifiable anger  V. How to overcome anger

"Be angry, and do not sin, do not let the sun go down on your wrath" (Ephesians 4:26).

I. What is anger?  Anger is an energy initiated by various attitudes such as impatience, unmet expectations, stress. It is a reaction to an undesirable situation.  Anger is an emotion  There four main emotions for every human  Anger, Fear, Sorrow & Happiness.  All other emotion is mix of two or three of these.  Anger + Fear =  Jealousy

I. What is anger?  The different between Anger & Wrath.  In Arabic only one word for Anger  Anger is emotion strong feeling of displeasure.  Wrath is strong, stern, punishment as the consequence of anger.

II. Is anger a sin?  The question frequently asked, "is anger a sin?"  St. Paul's words to the Ephesians "Be angry, and do not sin, do not let the sun go down on your wrath" (Ephesians 4:26).  St. Paul did not say not to get angry. Rather, he urged us not to sin.  Sinning resides in the way anger is expressed and the length of time it is allowed to dwell in the heart.  “Do not let the sun go down on your wrath"

III. The type of Anger  There are two types of anger: justifiable and unjustifiable.  Justifiable Anger: Example Moses' reaction to the Israelites worshipping of the golden calf.  (Exodus 32:19,20) "So it was, as soon as he came near the camp, that he saw the calf and the dancing. So Moses' anger became hot, and he cast the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain. Then he took the calf which they had made, burned it in the fire, and ground it to powder; and he scattered it on the water and made the children of Israel drink it“  When Jesus went into the temple.  “My house shall be called a house of prayer,' but you have made it a 'den of thieves'" (Mathew 21:12,13).

III. The type of Anger  Unjustifiable Anger:  This type of anger, (or rather, tree of anger) usually born from a seed of rejection, has its roots well established in the ego & the heart; and its branches bear the fruits of many other iniquities.  Cain & Abel (Gen 4)  “ So the Lord said to Cain ”why are you angry”? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it”  The murder of Naboth by Ahab, Jezebel (1King 21)

Anger  Cain and Abel

III. The type of anger  Unjustifiable Anger:  Joseph and His master (Potiphar)  Read (Gen 39:19)  Why his master was very angry?  Rush to judge, without evaluating  It was easer for his master to think that Joseph did it, than his wife betrayed him  This type of believing others before investigating  Ex of Susanna

VI. The steps that lead to unjustifiable anger Ex. Herod the horrible king: 1. He felt disturbed & troubled  Matt 2:3 “ When herod the king heart this, he was troubled”  Jesus Said in John 14:1 2. He reacted with fury when he did not get his WAY  Matt 2:16 “ Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry” 3. He sought to destroy any thing in his way  Matt 2:16 “And he sent forth and put to death all male children who were in Bethlehem and its districts, from two years old and under”

V. How to overcome anger 1.Try to find out what triggers your anger and avoid it. 2. Have a humble heart. “A humble person does not anger anyone nor get angry from anyone”. 3.He that angers thinks he is right and only sees the faults of others. 4. Blame yourself for everything that happens and do not blame others, this will quench your anger. 5. In the midst of your anger, try to think of the consequences of the words that you will say or utter.

V. How to overcome anger 6. Silence in time of anger is a virtue. Do not exchange harsh words with the other party but keep your silence unless you have tender words St. James says, "let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath" (James 1:19). 7.Love those who anger you for "Love bears all things" (1Cor 13:7) and try to understand them. 8. Let anger pass by and do not hold on to it. St. Paul says "Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath" (Rom 12:19).  Give place to wrath means give it way to go away and do not cling onto it.

V. How to overcome anger 9.Pray asking God to give you calmness, patience, self-control and longsuffering. 10. Pray for the person who made you angry and forgive him/her.

Anger "Wise men turn away from wrath" (Prov 29:8). "The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger" (Prov 19:11). "He who is slow to wrath has great understanding" (Prov 14:29).
