Objectives 1.Identify the 5 key elements of an effective paragraph. 2.Evaluate the purpose of humanities and write an effective paragraph about humanities. “Objective 1, 2, 1, 2 It’s a brand new day to learn something new.”

HAMBURGERS = PARAGRAPHS Conclusion (closing) Sentence Introduction/Topic Sentence

Topic Sentence = Top Bun  It is the 1 st sentence of your paragraph.  It must be indented!  Tells the reader your topic, or what you are going to write about in the paragraph. Introduction/Topic Sentence

Topic Sentence = Top Bun My sister has some disgusting and inconsiderate habits. First, she loves to chew on toothpicks. Another bad habit she has is walking through the house with her muddy boots. Last, she leaves hair all over the shower and the soap. She doesn’t bother to rinse the shower out or to rinse the soap off. If my sister lived alone, she could be the slob that she is without anyone else caring, but since she lives with other people, it would help if she showed a little more consideration for her family. Introduction/Topic Sentence

First Detail Sentence = LETTUCE  It must SUPPORT your topic sentence.  It should not be the most important detail.  It must come RIGHT after the topic sentence. First Detail Sentence

If my sister lived alone, she could be the slob that she is without anyone else caring, but since she lives with other people, it would help if she showed a little more consideration for her family.

Second (2 nd ) Detail Sentence = Tomato  It must SUPPORT your topic sentence.  It should not be the most important detail.  However, it is stronger than the first detail. Second (2 nd ) Detail Sentence

If my sister lived alone, she could be the slob that she is without anyone else caring, but since she lives with other people, it would help if she showed a little more consideration for her family.

Third 3 rd Detail Sentence = MEAT  Finally!! The most important detail.  Should start differently than most of the other sentences.  Always include an example with this detail. Third (3 rd ) Detail Sentence

STOP AND JOT: What does this mean? Humanities Concept Statement: In order to understand the world in which we live, we must understand the people and their experiences.

What are Humanities? Humans attempt to understand our relationship to ourselves, to others, to our past, to the future, to nature, and to the spiritual world.

Humanities embrace literature, language, music, art and even history and philosophy.

Humanities!!! Why study them? “ Knowledge and skills alone cannot lead humanity to a happy and dignified life. Humanity has every reason to place the proclaimers of high moral standards and values above the discoverers of objective truth. What humanity owes to personalities like Buddha, Moses, and Jesus ranks for me higher than all the achievements of the inquiring and constructive mind.” (Einstein).
