Audience Demographics  Website [search at the site] “About” pages media kit (print or online)  Google Publication name AND demographics Publication name AND “media kit”  Wikipedia

What that audience analysis should look like  [BEST] My audience is the readers of Ms. Magazine, a feminist publication. I read the movie reviews of Natalie Wilson, especially her World War Z review. Her reviews focus on the portrayal of women while leaving other criteria for other reviewers, so I tried to emulate that in my review.  [GOOD] Ms. Magazine has an audience of adult women who are largely part of the feminist movement in the United States. They are primarily liberal, and they hold views that empower women and that lead to a more prominent role in American society for women (What Is).  [DON’T BOTHER] Wired is a technology magazine that I had never heard of. I wrote the review for a general audience because I’m not that nerdy.

Purpose  What is a review? Judging based on a set of criteria that a specific audience would also judge the product using.

Kairos  [BEST] Reviewing an “old” game for a current publication should mean re-visiting or re-evaluating that game for the current audience. HOWEVER  [GOOD] You could have written a review for an old game as if it appeared in the magazine when the game was originally released, but that makes your task more difficult (and more things can go horribly wrong).

Context  How much does it cost? Ad-supported Fremium Pay  What platforms?  Where can I get it?

Negatives and Counterclaims How NOT to do it  the game has no worth…however, it can be sort of fun.  The graphics are laughable…however, some might think the graphics are cute.  The gameplay will keep you busy for hours…however, the game is a waste of time. The problem here is over-generalization of thesis/claim that is contradicted by counterclaim. It is better to base claims in evidence, and because evidence is limited, you don’t risk over-generalizing.

And while we are talking about consistency…  Please stop over-generalizing. “Everybody will love this game” “All teenagers love to play games on their phones” “This is the greatest game that has ever been or ever will be.” “The only way to enjoy the game is to ignore the single player campaign.” “This game is made for all ages.” “Everybody wants to be the best at video games.”

Titles Titles should be creative and informative, but ideally, match the style/tone of your publication:  [BEST] Is The Last of Us for the Rest of Us?  [GOOD] The Last of Us: Just How Amazing is It?  [ACCEPTABLE] Review of The Last of Us  [DON’T BOTHER] Assignment 2

…and one more thing  Rhetoric = noun  Rhetorical = adjective
