Aerospace Legend - Mary Feik Civil Air Patrol Colorado Wing Boulder Composite Squadron 1Lt Jim Garrard Aerospace Education Officer 06 March 2008

Aerospace Education Mandate As part of our Aerospace Education mandate for the Civil Air Patrol, we are presenting programs about individual leaders in aerospace with a particular focus on the named cadet achievements and awards. This week we will cover Mary Feik, Achievement 3 of Phase I (Learning) in the Cadet curriculum (cadets advance to C/SrA rank).

Mary Feik Born in 1924 First became interested in aviation at the age of 7 when a barnstormer came through her hometown area in a Curtis Jenny bi-plane. She rode in the aircraft and was enthralled. She resides in Annapolis, Maryland.

Mary Feik Overhauled her first automobile engine in her father's repair shop when she was 13, then turned to aircraft engines and military aircraft at the age of 18 Taught aircraft maintenance to crew chiefs and mechanics for theUnited States Army Air Forces in –DuringWorld War II, she became an expert on many military aircraft and is credited with becoming the first woman engineer in research and development in the Air Technical Service Command's Engineering Division at Wright Field in Ohio.

Mary Feik Logged more than 5,000 hours as a B-29 flight engineer, engineering observer, and pilot in fighter, attack, bomber, cargo, and training aircraft. Issued a brand-new model nicknamed "Mary's Little Lamb" in her honor when the Lcokheed P-80 entered service. Used her expertise to design high-performance and jet fighter pilot transition trainers and aircraft maintenance trainers. The pilot training manuals and technical engineering reports she authored were distributed throughout the armed forces.

Mary Feik Retired from the National Air and Space Museum's (NASM) Paul E. Garber Restoration Facility as a Restoration Specialist. She restores antique and classic aircraft and has participated in the construction of reproduction World War I aircraft, helping restore the NASM's 1910 Wiseman-Cook aircraft, a WWI Spad XIII fighter, and a 1930 Northrop "Alpha" mail airplane.

Legacy – Mary Feik Honored in the first group of Women in Aviation National Aviation Club (Sep 1985). Life Membership in the Air Force Sergeants Association (1989) – long standing experience with non-commissioned personnel in flight and maintenance projects. Women in Aviation Pioneer Hall of Fame (Mar 12, 1994) Order of Merit for outstanding leadership and support of Aerospace Education world-wide (August 1994), during the World Aerospace Education Congress held in Birmingham, UK Pioneer in the salute to Women in Aviation and Aerospace (Jan 11, 1995, 20th Anniversary of the International Women's Year) Charles Taylor "Master Mechanics Award (Feb 24, 1996) from the FAA in appreciation for dedicated service, technical expertise, professionalism, and many outstanding Maintenance contributions. Feik Civil Air Patrol Award (April 2003) – Her ultimate honor (in her words)
