Sarah Barcant

General information  A round character  Well-dressed, good-looking career woman in her thirties  Independent-minded, resolute, doesn‘t want to be sentimental, extroverted, self- confident, precise at work, curious  Studied at Harvard

Sarah‘s childhood  Grew up in Smitsrivier during apartheid  Her father had an optician‘s shop  Opposite of her ordinary parents

Sarah‘s relationship to Ben in her youth  First encounter when she was 14 and Ben was middle-aged  turning point, change in her life  Spent more time with him than with her parents, followed Ben‘s footsteps  Broke many taboos  hanging out in a black bar  imprisonment, released with the help of Ben

Sarah‘s life in New York  Started a new life by repressing her past  Opposite of her former life in Smitsrivier  Luxurious environment  Successful prosecutor

Sarah‘s feelings about being back in Smitsrivier  Familiarity  Realisation of changes  Is reminded of her former feelings  Likes the liveliness of South Africans  “Small-town life“

Ben Hoffman‘s opinion of Sarah Sarah was and still is like a daughter to me, but her behaviour has changed a lot since she has moved to New York. She seems like an unemotional prosecutor to me who has forgotten about the things that really count, but after all I trust her and I know that she‘s a woman who wants to achieve her goals.

Anna‘s opinion of Sarah I must admit that I‘ ve always felt a bit jealous of Sarah. You know I‘ve so little time left with my husband and right then Sarah must appear. I mean she‘s a nice girl and is a good prosecutor but when she‘s around it‘s always “Sarah, Sarah, Sarah“ for Ben.

Alex Mpondo‘s opinion of Sarah When I first met Sarah I felt a certain familiarity to her and liked the fact that she had agreed to help with the case although I had told myself before that I didn‘t want to be confronted with my past again – something that seemed to connect her to me, as I realised later on.

Sarah‘s interrogation technique was hard – she seemed to have no idea under what kind of pressure she put me while asking me about every single detail of my time in prison. Slowly but surely I accepted the fact that the only way to come to terms with my past was cooperation. In the end I really started to like Sarah!

Dirk Hendricks‘ opinion of Sarah My first impression of Miss Barcant: beautiful. My second impression: lawyer. My third impression: intelligent. My conclusion: I must wind her around my little finger. (I think I succeeded.)

Dirk‘s opinion of Sarah professionally  She‘s like all the other lawyers  Doesn‘t like her attitude, her interrogation technique and the fact that she‘s so certain of herself

James Sizela‘s opinion of Sarah All I ever wanted is to find the body of my son and Sarah helped me to achieve this aim even though somehow I didn‘t feel too much sympathy for her.

Pieter Muller‘s opinion of Sarah Sarah has always been a potential threat to me because she tried to discover the truth by all means. But I‘d rather commit suicide than agree to reconciliation.

Sarah‘s change in character  Torn between South Africa and the USA  Before: focus on her work; after the case: sees the persons and their needs behind it  more human  Sees herself on the same level with Ben professionally  independence  Learned to like Alex as a person
