Temptation

Definition of Temptation: It is important to make a distinction between two meanings within this one word. 1. On one hand, it signifies an attempt to entice someone into evil. (Often translated as temptations) –Satan is the ultimate source of all desires and actions contrary to God. –He is the tempter - Mat 4:3, 1 Thess. 3:5 2. On the other hand, it indicates a testing which aims at spiritual good. (Often translated as trials) - God tempted Abraham - Gen. 22:1 - Individuals tested through suffering - James 1:2-3

Purpose of Temptation # 1. To undermine God’s plan and will (Gen 3:4-5) # 2. To stray man from God’s way (John 10:10) # 3. To deny the authority of God and to seek independence from God. (Matt. 4:3) # 4. To establish our total dependence on God. (Gen. 22:1-2)

2.The LORD was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. 3.When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did, 4.Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. 5.From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. 6.So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Gen. 39:2-6a

Responses

Temptation 6bNow Joseph was well-built and handsome, 7 and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!” 8But he refused. “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. 9No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?” 10And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her. Gen. 39:6b-10

Temptation 11One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside. 12She caught him by his cloak and said, “Come to bed with me!” But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house. 13When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, 14she called her household servants. “Look,” she said to them, “this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us! He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed. 15When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”

The Lord’s Prayer “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. James 4:6-8 6But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 7Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
