An Industry Perspective Pete Large Vice President Trimble

Geospatial Data has evolved from paper maps, to GIS – and now toward 3D virtual models of our world.. Geodetic Control Cartography Paper Map Users Active Control GIS & Digital Maps Data Users CM Everywhere Mass usage and contribution Paper Maps Large Scale Small Scale GIS Digital Maps coupled to a database Virtual Worlds Accurate 3D in ‘the cloud’

Our ability to acquire and generate geospatial data is increasing exponentially. GTS India C1850 EDM RS Integrated Mobile Mapping Crowd Sourcing Photogrammetry Total Stations RTK & Robotic LiDAR Hi-Res Satellite Imagery TIME SPEED OF DATA COLLECTION

Integrated Mobile 3D Mapping Trimble MX8 integrates GPS, VRS, INS, LiDAR, Digital Photogrammetry and other sensors to create cm-accurate 3D models

216 Billion Data Points Per Hour Typical system –360 deg laser scanners (qty 2) –5 megapixel cameras (qty 4) ~60 million meas. & pixels per 50 mph ~216 billion in a single hour

Automated Information Extraction is Critical Clearance Measurements Ownership and usage Inventory & Pole Detection eCognition –Emulates the powerful human cognitive processes that extract intelligence from images to automate image analysis.

Integrated Mobile Mapping Goes Indoors: Trimble Indoor Mobile Mapping System (TIMMS)

Trimble Indoor Mobile Mapping System The technology now exists to map our world in 3D to cm level accuracy, from space, air, land and inside buildings. The economic case and policy issues are evolving. Some earlier examples from other industries…

Construction Workflow Automation: Technology -> Compelling Economics -> Policy

Virtual Reference Station Infrastructure Technology -> Compelling Economics -> Policy

An approach to formalizing land rights of the world’s poor, led by the private- sector in partnership with non-profit orgs. Driven by the economics of Microfinance and H. De Soto National policies need to evolve. Partnered Organizations Medeem & The Clinton Global Initiative A case where technology and economics are ahead of policy.

$50Bn spent annually on geospatial data...and yet... UK study: Damage to buried assets estimated at £150 million per year (2005) The impact on society including costs of delays to road users, disruption to business, environmental damage and safety costs, which total an estimated £5.5 billion per year

The Buried Asset Problem: One of Technology, Quality, Economics & Policy. Regulatory environment & policy Quality of data, and quality meta-data Availability of data Connected Community

eRespond: Crowdsourcing at work in the Smart Grid.

Some Concluding Remarks “Crowdsourcing” and “Authoritative” are not necessarily contradictory or mutually exclusive. Think eBay, Amazon, … –We already use this in Smart Grid technologies. 3D virtual worlds will be created with increasing spatial accuracy. The economic models and policy issues are yet to be resolved, but we can all play a part in that. The best things happen when technology, economic incentives and policy are aligned; easy to say, hard to do. Our profession is exciting, rapidly developing and multi- disciplinary; we all need to market it to the next generation.
