Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division School Bus Inspection Unit What do we see in the future for the School Bus Inspection Program? Increase School Bus Inspector staffing levels to 12 to improve service statewide. Improved service-- to Upper Peninsula with the addition of a full time inspector assigned to Marquette. Improved service-- to Metro and thumb area with the addition of a full time inspector assigned to new post location in Freeland (Tri-City Post). Improved service-- to include inspector consistency when reporting defects. Improved service as increased staffing level will accommodate more flexible and timely scheduling of bus fleet inspection, and allow time for driver and vehicle document review where applicable.

Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division School Bus Inspection Unit What is MSP doing to accomplish these goals? Fully automated, paperless inspection program – Allow inspector to inspection records directly to transportation director. – Allow fully searchable data to better determine types of defects and types of vehicles these defects are associated with. – Allow transportation directors electronic file to better manage fleet records. – This will allow easier access to fleet data for parents and the public. Decrease paperwork, more time dedicated to inspection – Result: more inspections in less time—freeing up mechanics!

Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division School Bus Inspection Unit Improved service to the public as school bus inspectors will be using laptop and tablet computers for school bus inspection functions. Vehicles will be mobile offices with printers, scanners and have full wireless connectivity allowing less office time and more inspection time. The Michigan State Police and the Michigan Association for Pupil Transportation are working on a joint project to update the Decal Application Policy (DAP). Input has been requested by stakeholders. (DAP Survey can be found on MAPT website-- – We will have an updated DAP available by May 2013 so that every school bus transportation provider is prepared for any changes that will be effective September 1, – Our goal is for school bus equipment requirements to be more consistent with Federal Vehicle Safety Standards as well as National School Bus Safety Standards. Some changes may take more time as Michigan has criteria that is not policy, but law (Public Act 187). Any changes in law will take more time to amend.Public Act 187
