In “Youth and Adult Perspectives On Violence Prevention Strategies: A Community-Based Participatory Study,” the authors discuss how beneficial activity centers are for youths and preventing youth crime. They go on to mention how youths can not get to their community centers because they are too scared, or not allowed to walk past street crime. Specifically vacant houses are identified as areas of trouble.

The authors of Greening Vacant Lots to Reduce Violent Crime: A Randomised Controlled Trail,” found that vacant lots are a source of violent crime in most cities. Their study found that “greening” the vacant lots, or cleaning them up, reduced violent crime in cities.

The article, “More Than Just an Eyesore,” discusses overall affects of vacant housing. They found that besides drawing violent crime, they also have negative health and mental effects. Vacant housing tends to overshadow the community feeling, making people feel less safe in their urban environment.
