Waterbury Branch Line Improvements opportunities to support sustainable development Tom Maziarz, Chief of Planning Connecticut Department of Transportation

Waterbury Branch Line Proposed major improvements will support growth in already developed corridor. help focus development in areas that already have necessary infrastructure o avoid greenfield development & loss of open space support redevelopment of historic town & urban centers o adaptive re-use of existing facilities o in-fill development in vacant & abandoned sites o can support re-use of brownfield sites

Waterbury Branch Line Proposed rail improvements: upgrade of existing single track rail line improve operational efficiency to provide more frequent service o goal: 30-minute peak period service o requires major improvements to tracks & facilities scale & cost will likely require phasing improvements over time

Early phase operational improvements Goal: increase peak period service Existing: A.M. = 2 trains, P.M. = 1 train Possible: A.M. = 3 trains, P.M. = 3 train Actions needed: full signalization 4 passing sidings Combination allows 2 trains to safely operate on track at same time Beacon Falls Ansonia Seymour Naugatuck Waterbury Derby-Shelton Milford Stratford

Full set of operational improvements full signalization 4 passing sidings Waterbury storage yard o more overnight storage & schedule flexibility add Devon station o direct connection to New Haven Line o trains do not have to enter NHL o eliminates capacity problems on NHL Beacon Falls Ansonia Seymour Naugatuck Waterbury Derby-Shelton Milford Stratford

Station improvements 1.platform improvements high level platforms for faster easier boarding longer platforms to accommodate longer trains 2.station amenities parking better intermodal connections better connections for TOD Beacon Falls Ansonia Seymour Naugatuck Waterbury Derby-Shelton Milford Stratford
