Introduction of spill kits Presented by PERFECT Organized by PAEDS Department of Paediatrics Safety Meeting

Equipment for handling Spill 1. Mercury Spill Kit (by Yeow Liang) 2. Universal Chemical Spill Kit (by Yeow Liang) 3. Biological Spill Kit (Refresh) (by Chiung-Hui) 4. Radioactive Spill Kit (by Chiung-Hui) 5. Haz-mat (by Chiung-Hui)

MERCSORB Mercury Spill Kit Contains: 270g of Amalgamation Powder 1 - Vapor Supressor Shaker bottle 1 - Waste Collection Bottle 1 - Chemical Sponge 1 - Disposal Bag & Twist Tie 250g of Indicator Powder 1 - Aspirator Bottle 1 - Mixing Tub with Spatula 1- pair Nitrile Gloves & Goggles 1 - Wisk On Pan Location: Clinical Research Centre MD 11, #02-08 Service Block: Rong Yan

Notes: 1) Kit sorbency capacity: 25ml (337g) of Mercury. 2) Kit does not neutralize mercury. Do not contain any chemicals designed to alter mercury’s toxicity or danger. 3) Mercury is absorbed directly through the skin and inhalation. 4) One time use. 5) Additional equipment may be needed, depending on size and extent of spill. 6) CAUTION: Only trained personnel.

Procedures: 1.Evacuate staffs from spill area. 2.Put on PPE. 3. Ventilate contaminated area. 4.Sprinkle Vapor Suppressor over spill 5. Collection visible mercury spill using wooden spatula/mercury aspirator bottle Empty mercury into mercury waste bottle

Procedures: 6. Activate Amalgamation Powder 57g in plastic mixing tub. Add just enough water to form a paste Mix well with a wooden spatula 7.Apply a strip of paste across the edge of contaminated area. Push the strip (in one direction only) slowly across the surface with a wooden spatula. Small droplet of mercury will be absorbed (repeat when required).

Procedures: 8.Place the contaminated paste into a disposal bag 9.Scrub the area with a moist chemical sponge and warm soapy water. 10.Dispose all used items and products in proper bag. 11.Sprinkle Mercury Indicator Powder over the area. For 24hr Colour change to pink or reddish-brown spots indicating contamination. Large black spots or areas indicate fresh or extensive contamination.

Procedures: 12.Collect the Mercury Indicator Powder and place in a disposal bag. 13.Clean up remaining mercury contaminated area with physical and chemical means. 14.Repeat steps until area is clear of contamination, 15.All used items must be disposed of as toxic waste. Demo:

Chemical (Universal) Spill Kit Contains: 1 - Five gallon disposal bucket pound Ampho-Mag pH Indicator 2 pairs - Nitrile Gloves 1 - Chemical suit 2 - Disposal Bag 1 - Disposal scoop & Brush 1 - Emergency Response Guide Location: Clinical Research Centre MD 11, #03-15 Service Block: Chemical Store Room

Notes: For small spill up to 3.75Litre Type of Chemical Spill kit: 1) Acid 2) Caustic (Corrosion) 3) Organic Ampho-Mag 1) Rapid and safely absorb spill 2) Change colors: red is for acid blue is for base yellow/green is neutral 3) Neutralize chemical

Procedures: 1.Evacuate staffs from spill area. 2.Put on PPE. 3. Ventilate contaminated area. 4. Spread Ampho-Mag Powder on any spill. Powder cakes up when wet to prevent spreading of spill. 5. A distinct color change: Red (acid) Blue (Base) 6.Continue application of Ampho-Mag Powder to neutralise: Yellow/Green (pH 9.5) 7.Use the Disposal scoop & Brush to clean up the ‘CAKE’ and dispose into the Disposal Bag. 8.All used items and products as be dispose of as normal biohazard waste.
