Presentation transcript:

Global Water Clean potable water is a critical requirement for all humanitarian assistance missions. In 2010, The UN General Assembly declared that, “access to clean water and sanitation is a human right.” Almost 900 million people worldwide lack access to clean water. Insufficient access to safe drinking water kills and sickens thousands of people a day. Natural disaster emergencies displace millions worldwide every year exacerbating the current conditions.

Water Health Facts Almost 4 million people die each year from water related diseases. 80 % of all illnesses in the developing world come from water borne diseases. About half the world’s hospital beds are occupied by someone with a water related illness. 1/3 of the world’s population live in water stressed areas. In India over 1 lakh die of water borne disease annually. Ground water in 1/3 of India’s 600 districts is not fit for drinking.

Why Water Purification? Source Stresses PollutionScarcity

Existing Water Sources are Contaminated

Why Point of Use? Central Treatment Challenge Developing Countries - Lack of Infrastructure Developed Countries - Aging Infrastructure & Intrusion Developing Countries - Lack of Infrastructure Developed Countries - Aging Infrastructure

Current POU Approaches An Application Challenge Too Simple – Another form of Chemical Too Complex – Dumb Down Industrial

Point of Use Current Approach Challenge Too Simple – Ineffective Purification Domestic RO More than 3 million units in use. Increasing at a rate of 25% per year Used in low TDS situations Wastes water

A great water treatment technology for Commercial and Industrial uses, to many pitfalls for low TDS POU RO Requires Pressure - Much Energy is Required RO Requires Pressure - Much Energy is Required Intermittent Use - RO Membrane Biofouls Intermittent Use - RO Membrane Biofouls Removal of Healthy Minerals - RO Removes All Salts Removal of Healthy Minerals - RO Removes All Salts Waste Water - RO Recovery is not optimized Waste Water - RO Recovery is not optimized POU Needs a Breakthrough RO is Not Always the Answer

India needs a breakthrough in filtration technology. High population of more than 1.2 Billion. Cannot afford to waste water. POU Needs a Breakthrough RO is Not Always the Answer

Bottled Water Still Prevails Simple POU Device Expensive and Wasteful

Bottled Water Comparison Global sales of bottled water account for over $60-$80 billion each year. India –More than 20 billion liters a year. –The estimated market value of India’s bottled water market is over 90 billion RS.

Environmental Impact 17 million barrels of oil used to produce water bottles each year in the US. –Enough to fuel 1 million cars/year. –2.5 million tons of CO 2. 3 times the amount of water to produce the bottle as it does to fill it. Only 1 in 5 bottles recycled. –3 billion pounds of waste.
