Objective: Compare the Administrations of Harding, Coolidge, Hoover 1920s Presidents Objective: Compare the Administrations of Harding, Coolidge, Hoover

PLATFORM Warren Harding (1921-1923) Return to Normalcy A REPUBLICAN WHO RAN AGAINST DEM JAMES COX AND HIS RUNNING MATE FDR Return to Normalcy after World War I TIRED OF WAR AND UPHEAVAL-WANTED THE COUNTRY TO GO BACK TO THE WAY IT WAS

1920-1933 REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT WOULD HOLD POWER BELIEVE REPUBLICANS WERE MORE LIKELY TO BRING STABILITY BACK TO THE COUNTRY HELD POWER IN ALL THREE BRANCHES OF GOVERNMENT FROM 1920-33

REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTS BUSINESSES WANTED SOCIAL STABILITY FAVORED BUSINESSES

HARDING’S PRESIDENCY Took office as the Red Scare and labor strikes were subsiding –starting fading away

Harding Favored these policies…. ISOLATIONISM WAR Isolationism—avoided foreign alliances… -did not want US to join League of nations - wanted international peace and stability-worked with other nations without creating alliances **expand trade but also protect goods at home through tariffs How are they going to pay off their war debt when they rely on trade with US for $$$???? Angered… Expand Trade + Tariffs

More of Harding’s Policies Disarmament Nativism and Immigration Called for Disarmament of European nations (does this go against isolationism? Nativism grew and many turned to the govt to fix the “immigration problem” RESTRICTED IMMIGRATION: Now could only make up 2% of the US’s population What do you believe Harding meant by a return to Normalcy?

Harding + The Spoils System Gave important jobs to friends and acquaintances

Scandal Officials stealing $$ Officials taking bribes TEAPOT DOME SCANDAL Harding's Interior Secretary Albert B. Fall *2 Private Oil Companies Drill on Gov’t land… 2 private oil companies drilled on govt land in Elk Hills, CA, and Teapot Dome, WY Let an oil company drill on government land in exchange for $300,000 and gifts Political cartoon:A 1924 cartoon depicting Washington officials racing down an oil-slicked road to the White House, trying to outpace the Teapot Dome Scandal. $300,000 + Gifts * Teapot Dome

The end of Harding and the beginning of Coolidge Heart Problems Coolidge was vp finishes term Not involved at all in scandals Goal: clean up white house Elected in 1924 Coolidge scrubbing the Republican party clean after the scandal

“The chief business of the American people is business” What does this mean?

Coolidge + Laissez Faire Leave business alone and the nation will thrive Lowered income taxes, increase protect tariffs Did not help the depressed agriculture industry

Calvin Coolidge aka “Silent Cal” What was Coolidge know for? Kellogg-Briand Act He played it cool 15 nations pledged not to use the threat of war with one another. Over 60 nations joined Problem-no enforcement

Herbert Hoover 1928 Election “Let the good times role” Millionaire Secretary of Commerce Protestant Let the good times role-organized food relief in Europe and was the Sec of Commerce for Harding and Coolidge Was a protestant and therefore was for prohibition Small towns liked him Won majority of electoral votes
