BACKGROUND Coalition for Sustainable Nutrition Security (Nutrition Coalition) - High level group of policy, programme and political leaders Representatives from Government, Planning Commission, Media, NGOs, National and International Development Partners, Private Sector Prof M S Swaminathan is leading the Nutrition Coalition evolved at the National Nutrition Conclave organised at MSSRF in Aug 2007
OBJECTIVES To conceptualise, organise and catalyse concerted efforts towards policy initiatives and creating a framework for strategies to address the problem of Malnutrition in the Country To function as a national observatory of issues and international best practices adopted To create a platform for discourse on the strategies adopted and working in the various states and provide regular feedback assessment of the impact Establish and Evolve a Centre for Excellence for national guidance to all Institutions working in area of malnutrition To organise research and development on the issues affecting the problem of nutrition in the Indian context

INTITUTIONALIZATION Over the past several months, there were discussions around the Institutionalization of the Coalition. These discussions were taken forward in various meetings of the Task Force constituted for this purpose The Participating Members under the chairmanship of Mr Nanda reinforced the concensual view of creation of a formal legal structure to lead the national movement amongst the different players The various formats/options were studied and analysed in detail (Section 25 Company, Society, Trust) The Society format is recommended to be the most flexible in terms of the membership and governance structure
