Higher Education in Hungary

Who are the applicants?  there is no upper age limit  those who pass their school leaving exams  those who already have a degree  either Hungarian or alien citizens can be taken to a university

What kind of exams?  Common exam for both the school leaving exam and the entrance exam (e.g. in maths, physics, biology, chemistry, English, German and French)  Special (the given university or college makes its own topics for the candidates)  United exams (the same written exam topics are valid in many universities or colleges, the exams are held in the same time and the results are accepted by the same kind of universities)

What kind of training can you choose?  Basic training (for those who have no degrees)  Additional training (for those having a college degree and want a university degree)  Regular courses  Correspondence courses  Evening courses  Open university courses

Entrance exams Who needs to take an entrance exam?  everybody, but in certain colleges and universities students need only to prove their previous good results Relief from entrance exam  students may be given relief from the exam in case they have reached an outstanding result in a national competition that is in connection with the subject of the entrance exam What kind of exam?  written,  oral or  practical exams (depending on the kind of the university or college)

How can you get a better result in the entrance exam?  If you have a language exam certificate (intermediate or advanced)  If you have a technician qualification  If you have a degree or a diplom  If you have an excellent result in sports e.g. you are a European Champion, a World Champion or Olympic Champion or at least you won a bronze medal.

Financial terms  To get the first degree –is supported by the government –students get social benefits and scholarship –they have to pay ‘only’ for their textbooks, and the re-sit exams  To get the second or third (…) degree, students have to pay a tuition fee that is determined by the given university or college

Learning languages at universities and colleges  Students can learn one foreign language for 4 semesters free, after that they have to pay for it  In more and more trainings it is compulsory to have a language exam certificate before graduating  Nowdays it is more and more common that students have a language exam certificate before applying for the university

Student life at universities Going to the cinema is the most common habit of college students library is common mainly amongst students of art theatre is the most intellectual habit ’Student Centre’ which is a ’Paradise’ for students tea rooms to discuss films, novels or poetry together Writing university newspaper articles own novels, short stories, poetry, films (and discuss them)
