Why should I care about malaria?

There are about 200 million cases of malaria each year

A child dies every 60 seconds from malaria

Malaria disproportionately affects pregnant women and children, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa 77% of deaths from malaria occur among children under the age of five 90% percent of the deaths (all ages) due to malaria occur in sub-Saharan Africa

Malaria is highly related to poverty 90% of all deaths caused by malaria are in Africa.

USD 12 billion per year in direct losses Loss of 1.3% of GDP growth per year for Africa Household spending : >10% of yearly (Africa) Source: Global Malaria Action Plan (2008) The high economic costs of malaria contribute to a cycle of poverty

What is malaria?

How is malaria transmitted? Human HostVector Parasite Blood meal

Malaria is preventable and treatable !

How is malaria prevented?

Insecticide-treated Nets (ITN) An average of 54% of households in sub-Saharan African countries had at least one ITN in 2013

Each $10 = 1 net.

Diagnosis and Treatment Rapid Diagnostic TestArtemisinin Combination Therapies

Has there been progress in the fight against malaria?

In 2006, every 30 seconds a child would die from malaria. Now thanks to Nothing but Nets it has been reduced to every 60 seconds

Renewed Global Commitment to Fight Malaria Creation of: The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria President’s Malaria Initiative

Looking Forward

More nets are needed At least 150 million insecticide-treated nets are needed each year to protect all populations at risk of malaria in sub- Saharan Africa The projected number of nets delivered in 2014 will still fall below the minimum number needed to protect everyone at risk of malaria
