Effects of Global Warming By Brandon Warren Chris Jurich Jared Scherling

What is Global Warming? An average raise in the temperature of atmosphere close to the Earth’s surface which can contribute to the changes in the global climate patterns.

What Causes Global Warming? Carbon dioxide Factories producing cement, steel, aluminum Power Plants Agriculture Landfills These are some of the problems causing serious pollution

Acid Rain !98% of SO 2 and NO X emissions !Acid rain is rain or any other form of precipitation that is unusually acidic. !Acid rain is mostly caused by human sulfur and nitrogen emissions.

Reducing Acid Rain !Clean up smokestacks and exhaust pipes !Use alternative energy sources !Take action as an individual by turning off appliances, insulate your home, carpool, have vehicles with low NO x and be well informed.

Tree Rings Tree rings grow annually with a light layer in the spring and a dark layer in the autumn How well the tree grows is dependent upon how much water, light and pollutants the tree receives

Uses of Tree Ring Samples Very reliable Used by archaeologists to chart annual rainfall, temperature, and forest fires Used by NASA to plot annual changes in weather and pollutants

Our Tree Ring Example Our tree ring is about 58 years old It grew quickly for 4 years, then less for its remaining lifetime For the last 10 year portion of its life, it shows a drier climate, resulting in slower growth and drier wood Pollutants from acid rain could have caused its slower growth as well as the warmer climate This could be because it lived by the side of a road that gradually got larger and had more vehicles on it

Global Warming will cause… Rising sea levels flooding on the east coast and Gulf of Mexico Warmer seas Concern of melting glaciers raising sea level More mosquito borne diseases Hurricanes to be stronger and more dangerous Makes wild fires United States largest source of global warming Earth has been getting hotter over the past 50 years

Things That Can Stop Global Warming Use fluorescent light bulbs instead of incandescent light bulbs Use solar panels Use wind energy, create wind farms Reduce vehicles that run on gas Reduce power plants Conserve energy
