Why do people plagiarize 1. Time Crunch 2. Laziness 3. Competition 4. Confused 5. Citation Errors

Time Crunch/Procrastination Homework piles up Sports take up a students time Students procrastinate o Lose track of time

Time Crunch "Twenty percent of people identify themselves as chronic procrastinators. For them procrastination is a lifestyle, albeit a maladaptive one" Psychology Today

Time Crunch Students get very accustomed to putting off work which leads to bad procrastination habits.

Time Crunch Bad Procrastination Habits ---> Need for a last minute shortcut.

Laziness Homework or essays can be too boring o Work isn't engaging enough o Students just want to be done with work and do other fun activities

Laziness pt. 2 Students become completely disengaged o Don't see why they should work  Completely lose interest

Laziness pt. 3 Student may feel to tired to work o Don't want to actually put any effort into working.  Plagiarizing takes less time and effort

Procrastination/Laziness, the Catholic View "You have no idea what your life will be like tomorrow. You are a puff of smoke that appears briefly and then disappears...

Procrastination/Laziness, the Catholic View So for one who know the right thing to do and does not do it, it is sin.” James 4: 14,17

Catholics believe that a habitual procrastination leads to "sloth", which is one of the seven deadly sins. Procrastination/Laziness, the Catholic View

Competition Students resort to plagiarism when they feel that it is the only way to move ahead. They are too academically pressured -> plagiarism

Confusion Writers block o Student just can't think of anymore to write o Looking on the internet/copying and pasting is easier than working

Confusion pt. 2 Lacking understanding o When they were taught the subject in class they didn't listen or understand it  Don't know what to write  They choose plagiarism

Accidental Plagiarism Oftentimes, students forget to cite their source or do it incorrectly o Don't follow instructions properly

Accidental Plagiarism Plagiarism is still plagiarism even if it not intentional. o It is important to cite sources to avoid this problem

Accidental Plagiarism Ties in with Laziness Sub-point: o Students are too tired to cite properly on a bibliography at the end of the paper.

Accidental Plagiarism Students subconsciously phrase things in the same way they heard it from another text o Don't Realize, its not original thought  To Kant, it is OK.

Catholic Views The Catholic Encyclopedia discusses fraud o It defines fraud as an act or course of deception deliberately practised with the view of gaining an advantage htm

Catholic Views o The act of plagiarism fits this perfectly as it is an act of deceiving others into believing others' work is yours for your advantage o The Church declares this act not only insincere but also an act against justice. htm

Catholic Views The Catholic Encyclopedia discusses lying o It defines lying as a statement at variance with the mind

Catholic Views o Although some ethicists have argued the morality of lying for the greater good, there is no moral defense for lying to others for personal gain
